  1. No, absolutely. I think consumer tastes change. You know, sneakers were the biggest must-have discretionary item. They're simply not that anymore. We'll see when Best Buy reports. Is some of that discretionary purchasing gone to electronics? You know, maybe it has. You know, people change and whoever's winning changes. Walmart has been a fantastic player, for example. They've done amazing in their business. And yet when the report came out, they were down 9% in one day, one of the worst days in Walmart stock's history. Meanwhile, Target, which has been beaten down terribly and actually underperformed for a long time, is doing a much better job this year, and they're up something like 60% this year. And their stock, of course, was up sharply on their results last week. TJX, one of the, one of the big winners consistently year over year over year, came out with a report that wasn't that bad, but their stock went down. Meanwhile, Ross Stores, their big competitor, had over a 10% same-store sales gain and their stock shot up, you know, so, so the consumer is there, they're shopping. There's no doubt retail sales in July were up 5% year over year. The consumer is not sick, but they're choosy. They want value. And for discretionary items, they want innovation. And innovation is not there. They are not buying.

  2. You're going to buy yen? No. You're going to buy Swiss francs? No. Well, let's buy gold. And that's the narrative. I'm not— again, the end of the dollar has been foretold many times, and I'm not sure that it's any more likely now than it was in the past. But for whatever reason, central banks have been accumulating this stuff. And so you have, behind any day-to-day volatility, you have a real fundamental bid for a scarce asset. Like always happens in financial markets, gold got ahead of itself in 2022, huge bull run up, big correction, bottomed out recently. I think it's bottomed and I think we're seeing a new run up in gold for two reasons. One, that fundamental bid from central banks and two, again, the perception— reality doesn't matter, but the perception of uncontrolled inflation. And that perception comes from people look at Treasury market actions and they conclude from that, incorrectly in my opinion, but just my opinion, they conclude from that incorrectly that a new wave of inflation is coming and therefore best buy gold. And so gold's on the up for those two reasons. Now, in my opinion, you know, it doesn't really matter why volatile assets like gold or crypto are rising. You know, if you learn how to read price and volume movements, then the why something is happening is sort of— might be interesting for a dinner party, but it's not very relevant to trying to make money or trying to avoid losing money. You know, charts will help you navigate those prices, and the, the why is just opinion. We can't ever really know until after the fact. But I think the, the gold bull market, which again, I think we're in a bull phase in gold, and we'll see how long it lasts, but I think for a good few months again, is driven by fears of uncontrolled inflation, which, you know, the narrative says, well, oil prices must keep rising, says the narrative, because of what's happening in the Gulf. So the narrative treats that as a fact. And the narrative says, therefore, that must be an inflationary wave heading our way. And the narrative also says, well, the Treasury's market actions must also mean an inflationary wave coming our way. So we have two inflationary waves coming together. Uncontrolled by rate hikes.

  3. And it's like, that's great. That's pretty niche. And like literally only one class of depraved people were buying those. Right. Now they're just a product. You can just buy them. They're advertised. They're at Best Buy. You can buy them. In the airport gadget kiosk before your flight. Like they're ubiquitous scaled mass market consumer products and scale changes everything.

  4. But look, that sounds to me a lot like whack-a-mole. That doesn't sound like a sustainable strategy. Rachel mentioned they're going to differentiate themselves by lowering prices. Walmart called, you know, I think they've been trying that for a long time. Target. This is the dangerous thing about retail. Nobody has just a God-given right to exist. We see retailers fall out of favor and never recover all the time. That's why it is really good news that they seem to have stopped the slide. But is it a good investment from here? I think they still have a lot of work to do to explain, like kind of the way Best Buy has explained and Dick's has explained, we are here because we provide blank. I still don't think we have the answer to that question for Target. I don't think floral pattern phone cases are the long-term answer there.

  5. So to be honest, people always ask me like, are you worried about competition? And I say no, I encourage more people to get into this field because there is a great opportunity for young people to learn a new trade. And it should be taught in trade school, honestly, because there's no real schooling for this. It's a really good opportunity for a lot of people to get out there. And whether it's just doing in-home calls and just setting up printers for people that are a little bit older, or, you know, software-based hardware issues, data recovery, like fine detailed data recovery. Most of these shops that you talk to, they're overwhelmed with work 'cause there's so much demand and there's just not enough people out there to fix 'em. Especially when you have the carriers, Best Buy, the Geek Squad, they don't, they don't touch it. They just sell you a new one. Apple even, that most of the time when they say, oh yeah, like we have AppleCare, we're gonna give you, you know, we're gonna fix it. Most of the time they just take the old one and give you a new one. And they, they charge you, you know, the $100 or whatever it is, and they just give you a whole new phone and there's no information on it. So honestly, I recommend if you're young and you're, you know, thinking about getting into this industry, you should definitely start taking the leap, start doing it on the side, help out friends and family, and you can really grow a great company no matter where you are. 'Cause every household has probably 10 to 15 devices now.

  6. And then you're gonna have to, there's gonna be a, a, a strong possibility. You have to swallow your pride on some things. You have a graduate degree, you are a mental health professional, and Saturdays and Sundays you're at Walmart or Best Buy. Slinging boxes. Like, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to set me and my house free.

  7. I mean, so this one is the most personal and I have to buy the Baltimore Orioles and figure out how to do it. Although I do like, we have the Carlisle guy, David Rubenstein owning them now. But, uh, look, I'm not going to say this is the best buy, but I just, there's tradition there. There's a rabid fan base. The whole Washington thing is behind us. I'm going with my heart here. I'm buying the Orioles just because my fantasy as a little kid was to turn, was to pitch the Orioles to back-to-back World Series.

  8. Upgraded Best Buy earlier in the week on a Truist, Jim. Right. Year to date, I mean, Best Buy's doubled the S&P.
