Two days in a row of gains for the Dow. And in fact, after yesterday's close, the Dow was only about 2.4% from an all-time high. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closed down for 2 days in a row yesterday, or 2 out of the last 3 sessions yesterday. The S&P 500 this morning indicated up by about 32 after yesterday's close. It was about 2.1% from an all-time high. And then the Nasdaq is off by about 4, 4.5% from an all-time high. This morning, though, it's indicated up by 300 points. Energy prices, something we've been watching closely, they have climbed in recent sessions, but this morning they are down by about 3.4%, coming after some of this announcement of this economic D-Day.

Carl Quintanilla — Squawk on the Street · 9AM Hour: Stocks and Bessent After the Sell-Off, Oil Prices and the Trump Effect, Walmart Price Target Cut Parade 8/21/26 · 2026-08-21No, no, this does not sound entirely above board. And obviously minor aristocrats and journalists are unfortunately going to be a bit of an underlying villain of our story today. But there was one, of course, from your book I was delighted to read, there was a Viennese journalist who made fun of all this stuff. He could clearly see where things were going. And there's this great quote where he said that Companies were founded to transport the aurora borealis in pipelines to St Stephen's Square and to win mass sales for our boot polish among the natives of the South Sea Islands. So he was clearly mocking this giant boom that started in 1871 and continued until 1873. It became known as the Gründerzeit, or in English, the Founders' Era, the boom of the founders. It's kind of a hot tech bubble. What caused it?

Carl Quintanilla — Squawk on the Street · 9AM HOUR: Cramer's Micron CEO Exclusive in Boise, Walmart Tumbles, Oil Jumps and Yields Rebound 7/20/26 · 2026-08-20Good morning, everybody. Welcome to Squawk Box right here on CNBC. We are live from the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square. I'm Becky Quick, along with Andrew Ross Sorkin. Joe is out today. We are coming off 3 days in a row of declines for all 3 of the major averages. And for both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, yesterday was their worst performance this month. However, you are talking about these major averages, uh, making some pretty major moves over the course of this year. Even since the Iran war began, you can look at the S&P up by almost 12%. The NASDAQ is up by about 16%. And if you're looking at the NASDAQ 100, it is up by more than 18%. It's kind of interesting when you look at how that shapes up against energy. WTI is up about 27% over that course of time, and yet Equities markets have marched steadily higher. You're looking this morning at energy prices higher once again, up by just over 1.1% for WTI, which is trading just under $86 a barrel at $85.93. And then you've got Brent crude up by more than 1% as well, is trading just above $92 at $92.01.
