Analysts said that despite intense focus of late on monthly inflation data, the biggest change to the outlook has come from a run-up in energy and commodity prices. It's the fact that the war in Iran has re-intensified and the energy price shock is getting bigger again, said William Dudley, the former New York Fed president. What you got for me, Jordy?

Tom Keene · Bloomberg Intelligence · Instant Reaction: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on Fed Policy · 2026-09-16Well, the history is, Lisa, is that we typically don't see one and done. And so I think that is— that's relevant. You think— think about it. If we're really our target by more than 100 basis points, What is 25 basis points on rates going to do for that? So I think there's a credibility to that. Got very specific communication guide. Williams and Waller and others saying, look, we want to see progress. I think Williams put out there 0.2 per month on core. And since then, we haven't got 0.2 per month on, on core, especially given where I think we're going to end up with the core reading later this month. And so I think They wanted to see that progress. I think Chris Waller said give disinflation a chance and they hadn't seen it. So I think especially after Jackson Hole, it was important to, to ratify that reaction function.

So William MacAskill was one of the two big utilitarians at Oxford that helped found effective altruism. And I crossed paths with him sort of earlier on in the EA world when they were really caring about especially like the idea of donate most of your salary to charity. There's a talk you can find and I— it's on YouTube and I forget exactly when this happens, but there's a famous talk you can find of McCaskill where he basically comes out and says this is the new thing we should care about is existential, the existential threat of superintelligent AI. This is the sort of long-termism. So they used this— there's another idea that comes out of Silicon Valley, but this long-term view of what's going to happen over the next 1,000 years is actually, if we're just going to do the math, 100 trillion future lives matters more than, you know, 50 million lives now. So he kind of has this moment where he gives this big speech that— where he's sort of announcing this is the new direction for EA. And so now they're like roughly interchangeable.

So some cause for optimism amid, you know, sort of disappointing interest rate news. Anyway, the people, they will get a vote on AI safety. The Wall Street Journal has an opinion piece here about the role democracy will play in the AI discussion that we've been having over the last couple weeks. So the technology risks came into focus last week. Is the political system prepared, says William Galston in the Wall Street Journal. Experts have long worried about economic, social, and social and security impact of artificial intelligence. This year, those risks have moved on to the public agenda as growth, as job growth slowed, worry spread that AI would displace entry-level workers. Next, local concerns proliferated about the effects of AI data centers on water, electricity, the environment, and noise.

Next, local concerns proliferated about the effects of AI data centers on water, electricity, the environment, and noise. Then, in a widely reported incident, an OpenAI test went awry. A swarm of AI agents bypassed internal limits, created their own message board, and cooperated to hack another AI firm. As a recent journal article made clear, this wasn't the only such event. Last week, mounting fears within the largest AI firms at the frontier of AI development burst into public view.
