  1. Do you have intuitions for why the chain of thought is getting wonky? It's a quite different dialect or way of processing information clearly that goes on in the chain of thought with all this like vantage, illusions, disclaim, whatever. We also see this now with Astra and the way that it sends messages to its subagents, which I had naively thought has to be some sort of like length penalty or brevity reward or something. But then it seems like maybe not because people are like counting tokens and saying, you could just say the thing like in fewer tokens if you just said it. So it remains a mystery as to And I don't know if OpenAI is a better explanation, but they certainly have been saying, we're looking into this, it's important, we want to figure out why this is happening.

  2. I mean, for me, like probably not a decision I could make, but I'm not sitting in your position either. I also don't run a big building as a money machine. You know, there's two different, two different sides to that. Let's look at it this way from your vantage. You come from like real hippie, this is Silicon Valley. People's running around the streets, probably no shoes on, like that Silicon Valley, right? Yeah. Yeah.

  3. Awesome guy. One of the best and most famous memory competitors, formerly world champion of memory. Super good person. Yeah. And he's very good at coaching people to get incredibly good at memory competition. There was an entire book written about this called Moonwalking with Einstein. He has a startup called MindMax, which is a learning app if people want to check it out. But this book, Hard Times: An Illustrated Oral History of the Great Depression by Studs Terkel, contains many dozens of vignettes and profiles of people who went through the Depression, from the most destitute to the rich who lost everything, to the jingle writers who actually had the most incredible explosion of creativity during that period. And they're very bite-sized profiles. The stories are told both in their own words and in the words of Studs Hoosier. Trying to convey different perspectives on everything from these different vantage points.

  4. Yeah. And of course, a lot of questions over what the economy really looks like from the vantage point of companies. Hmm.

  5. Where are they in their adoption? And have they, what sort of benefits are you seeing them reap already? And what is the roadmap for them as far as you can tell from your vantage point?

  6. But do we have the authority as a society to take that person against their will and force them onto Inviga medicine? Do— what authority do we have? And I think what I found is that people of good faith who work on this, actually work on this issue, are deeply confused about it. It is hard. We talk about bodily autonomy in this country, right? We want women to have bodily autonomy. Well, does that mentally ill person have bodily autonomy? Is the right thing for their dignity to actually force them to their happiness? These are very, very difficult questions. And I spent, you know, 3 years with people living them, right? This is a book of reporting, not opinion. A lot of us have opinions about this stuff we're seeing in our cities. I wanted to go beneath that and live in the lives and in the heads of these folks dealing with this from every vantage point.

  7. Um, so we got to fix those in the manuscript. And then I used it for editorial feedback. I have a, uh, a clod, uh, Council of Clods, I call it. Which is sort of my, um, my team of Claudes that are assigned to different personalities and, uh, and vantage points. So I have one who's like a hardcore LLM skeptic who, you know, goes through the draft and tells me, you know, oh, this is what I object to. This is what I object to. You're anthropomorphizing here. It's not really thinking here. I have one that's like a, uh, like a sort of Kurzweil type futurist that wants to like, you know, expand the, the vision of the future in the book. So there, like, some of this was just slop and probably wasted more time than it saved. But like, there were a couple things that the Council of Clods said to me where I was like, oh yeah, that's a good point. I should go back and revise that.

  8. A lot of people, in my experience, tell you that they believe people are important, but then they don't walk the talk. So they actually don't put in the time or effort into that as those words would warrant. So at Benysource, we try to remind ourselves that the jobs we offer are our most important product, more important than any customer-facing product we have. So we try to make those jobs as great as possible. Then word of mouth will help you a lot. You hire 2 people that are absolutely happy and satisfied and they will tell their other friends from university, it's actually fantastic here, you should join. We have hired so many people that way. So, and we can discuss how we've tried to make jobs here amazing. It's actually not that difficult if you stop for a second, remember that like you are in a, as a founder or CEO, you are in an unusual position and in an awful vantage point actually trying to stand in the shoes of team members.

  11. And Nat, this tees us up for a useful inquiry to just level set for everyone who's thinking, I still don't even know what evals mean or what some sort of investigation would include or what incident monitoring would address. I, full disclosure, have been a fan of Mackenzie's analysis here. I now refer to the difference between lawmakers' expectations and the implementation of that law as the quote unquote Arnold Gap, because he called this out earlier than most folks. And I'm hoping it makes it into some public policy textbooks down the road, but, but we'll see. But Nat, for listeners who are thinking, what would it look like, or why do we even need this concept of embedded evaluators? And how would that have addressed, for example, this Hugging Face OpenAI incident? Can you explain in practice what that could look like from the vantage point of the labs?
