The video gaming industry. This is an industry that I'm pretty ignorant of, and it just amazes me when I look at the numbers for this business. The global video game industry generates roughly $214 billion in annual revenue, making it larger than the film and music industries combined. It's just extraordinary how big this business is. It's a global business and it is just extraordinary. Our next guest, he knows what's going on there. Nathan Naidoo joins us here, technology research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. He's based in London. Hey, Nathan, let's talk about Take-Two. What's the story here? Frame out the investment story for Take-Two. What's the market really geared towards?
Paul Sweeney · Bloomberg Intelligence · Boeing Lays out Challenges Ahead · 2026-09-17I think it's just really the one thing that's Grand Theft Auto 6. That game is a juggernaut. It has sold half a billion copies of games. In that franchise's entire lifetime. And the 6th version installment is launching mid-November, November 19th to be exact. And for the first time, they made a premiere and put it on Netflix. It's about 26 minutes long, longer than your 5-minute trailer. And it was the most viewed film globally, globally for that week on Netflix. And the fact that it caused like engagement spikes on Netflix tells me that there's there's such hunger because it has been such a long wait since GTA 5, which was launched 13 years ago. And there's a lot of expectations that have been baked into Take-Two's stock because of GTA 6 release. And there's a lot of expectations. And to quote the CEO, terrifying. How terrifying?
Nathan Naidoo · Bloomberg Intelligence · Boeing Lays out Challenges Ahead · 2026-09-17Every year since then, every year in the 13 years since it was released, it adds €300 to €400 million units— sorry, €300 to €400 million a year to Take-Two's top line. So this game has a lot riding on it.
Nathan Naidoo · Bloomberg Intelligence · Boeing Lays out Challenges Ahead · 2026-09-17The average spend per gamer on console and PC are always going to be higher because these are where your hardcore gamers reside. They are the ones who invest to buy a console or to buy a gaming PC. I would like to game on my MacBook Air, but I don't think that's possible anytime soon. But mobile is where you have volume. It's essentially a volume game. The average spend is lower per gamer, sure. But then you're talking like 30x more gamers or downloads on mobile compared to PC and console combined just in 2025. So, um, but it doesn't mean that Take-Two can easily tap that market. A lot of PC and console gamers historically have relied on partnerships, partnering with an expert in making mobile games to actually launch, uh, mobile versions of their franchise.
Nathan Naidoo · Bloomberg Intelligence · Boeing Lays out Challenges Ahead · 2026-09-17And, and I think Netflix, uh, is a good example because Take-Two actually put GTA Trilogy on the Netflix app for a brief period of time. And I believe you can actually download one of those games on mobile. And, you know, it was one of the top-performing mobile games for Netflix and it came from a Take-Two franchise. So essentially, this Netflix-Take-Two partnership with the premiere could be, you know, a telltale sign of what's to come for Take-Two.
Nathan Naidoo · Bloomberg Intelligence · Boeing Lays out Challenges Ahead · 2026-09-17Is the world ready for Grand Theft Auto 6? Well, Netflix aired 27 minutes of gameplay last night. This is the biggest reveal yet. From Take-Two. Shares of the stock moving higher this morning. CEO Strauss Zelnick told us earlier this month the game was on track to exceed expectations. It is due out November 19th, though I should tell you my son was telling me that there may be a leak of the game. I don't know if you've seen—
Andrew Ross Sorkin · Squawk Pod · Affirm’s Q4 & Big Tech in Court: Meta & Anthropic Rulings 8/28/26 · 2026-08-28Looking to the economy, jobs numbers look solid ahead of Fed Chairman Kevin Walsh's Jackson Hole speech on Friday. Weekly initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell to 203,000 versus 208,000 consensus and 207,000 prior. Continuing claims also came in below expectations. Pantheon Macro says the continuing claims figures look broadly consistent with the unemployment rate holding steady in August. In another news of note, not many video games get their own making-of shows. Take-Two Interactive's Rockstar Games will premiere Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look on Netflix at 3 PM Eastern time today. The preview will be exclusive to Netflix for 6 hours before the same video arrives on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA 6 site. And the company addressed spoilers that leaked. "It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time," they said. "While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19th." Rockstar added that the game is nearly there. That's all for today's Wall Street Lunch. Look for links for stories in the show notes section. On Claude, but I found that I didn't need it as much. The U.S. Army unit dangling a chance for re-enlisting troops to binge what's sure to be the year's hottest video game. The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion based at Fort Seward, uh, Seward, Georgia, uh, has now offered soldiers 4 extra days off around the time that Take-Two Interactive releases Grand Theft Auto 6. This is happening in mid-November if the troops extend their military commitments. Fort Stewart spokesperson telling the Associated Press an Army career counselor came up with the idea in part to remind soldiers of approaching re-enlistment dates. The spokesperson said that at least 20 of 130 eligible soldiers so far taken the perk. And— but by the way, people are addicted to this game. I have kids who play this game. They shouldn't be playing this game. I don't know if you know how violent this game is.

Andrew Ross Sorkin · Squawk Pod · Open-Sourcing Meta & Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Orders 8/10/26 · 2026-08-10Yeah, actually people have been waiting, especially fans. You say cultural totem, I think it's more like a cult at this point. People, fans have been waiting for 13 years. That was how long ago the GTA 5 was released. And there is such a strong pent-up demand for this franchise. Yeah, exactly. And even in the last 13 years, still 18 million people play it every single month across PC and console, and it remains the third most played biggest game of all time as of March. This tells you how much there is a demand. And you can see the shares of Take-Two, the parent company, actually is trading up today. And that tells you that even though the guidance, which we think is on the conservative side, people still believe that the games might actually perform better than what the company is saying.
