  1. I heard that some generator company just got a big order from Amazon to build generators because, you know, If the main power fails, they want to make sure that the generators kick in. So, yeah, I think this is, this is huge. I was on CNBC with the head of Trane Technologies, you know, the guys that make the HVACs.

  2. These traditional HVAC and building system companies are massive established corporations. Johnson Controls and Trane have immense research and development budgets. Are they actually losing active business right now, or is the market unfairly penalizing them? I mean, why can't they just buy their way into the liquid cooling space with their billions in revenue?

  3. Today we are breaking down machine vision leader Cognex. Our guest today is Brett Larson from NZS Capital and Brett returns to business breakdowns. We covered trained technologies last year and Brett gives us a different angle on the industrial economy with Cognex. Today we get into the history of machine vision and how Cognex is a factory player, but I particularly enjoyed the strategic angles of this discussion. Cognex is not your typical reoccurring revenue story. They are a self proclaimed cyclical that has tended to focus on a specific customer segment over time, looking for S curves that might trigger their next growth era. This is evolving and we get into a lot of that with Brett. In this discussion I'd mention the big name businesses tend to attract the widest audience, but these are my favorite episodes. So please enjoy this business breakdown on Cognex. All right Brett, it is great to have you back. It was about a year ago that we covered Trane maybe a little bit more than a year ago, but it's an episode that I referenced quite a bit over the past few months and one that I consistently go back to. I'm hoping that we get the same thing today with Cognex. It was a name that I wasn't familiar with and it's a very interesting name that seems to not get get a ton of attention or conversation going as I was doing my research. Easiest place to start is just with an introduction to who Cognex is and what they do.

  4. Short answer is I did not have an early investing interest, meaning in my pre college years I had lots of interests. I was a very active reader, eclectic interests, but investing was not among them. Until the year after I graduated from college, I went on vacation in Maine and I brought some books with me to read during vacation. And it was a period which you can get in the summers in Maine where it basically rained for the entire week, fog and rain the entire week. And so I had read the books I'd brought with me and I was looking for something else to read. And in the house I was staying in. There was a book called the Money Masters by John Trane. I just pulled it off the shelf and I read it. I read the first chapter of it and it was literally a light bulb, cliched light bulb. Paul to Damascus kind of a moment. I was like, okay, that's what I want to do now. The first chapter was on Buffett, and it was just immediately intellectually engaging read that, immediately came back and sent away old snail mail style with a stamp sent away for the collection of the annual letters which you could get from Omaha by mail. Immediately read those and subscribed to oid. Just sort of got totally into trying to understand it and figure it out. But that happened, as I say, kind of immediately post college. But then it became something that was quite fun.
