Travelers ($TRV) podcast mentions

  1. There's no one at this table that can say there's not a direction of travel. That's right.

  2. And if you, if you keep on this direction of travel, then bad things are more likely to happen.

  3. I don't think anyone, especially the president, doubts now. I hope Warsh has skin like tungsten because you need it. Do all stocks go down when the Fed tightens? For many, the stock market's a commodity, like bonds, like real estate, like the dollar. When you learn to be a professional money manager, you recognize that the Fed can crimp credit creation. Fed chief referenced the hyperscalers as companies that can crowd out a lot of borrowers. You raise rates, you can shut the spigot off. So there are managers who are taught to sell all stocks when the Fed tightens and go into cash. Because you sell stocks when the economy slows. Warsh made it clear that's the plan. That selling crushed us today until tech rallied at the end of the day. But there are other managers who say stay the course. I'm picking the stocks of companies that could do well regardless of what happens with interest rates, like pharma. There are other things that could do okay here, like tech. And then there's the rest— financials, retail, travel, leisure, so many others, all not so hot. The rest before this was small. Lots of stocks going higher. The rest small, but it's going to keep growing and growing and growing as long as inflation ratings, readings stay high.

  4. So there's— I just say it's just harder and harder to find good stocks. I hope the Washington comments might have calmed the bond market, which has been terrible with rates going up relentlessly. Nope. Interest rates were going down before the Fed chief started talking and then they reversed and went up bad. And again, another thing that gives us fewer stocks to buy. Ultimately, I think I like it when the Fed chief shows gumption, but it's not good for the near term for most stocks. Long term, it's essential because it prevents runaway inflation. For now, though, look, if you're trying to manage money like I do with my travel trust, you can follow along at CMC Investing Club. There are fewer stocks to buy, fewer to hold, more stocks to sell. Do Warsh want us to lose money today? No. But whereas some interpret his meaning, he wants as few stocks as possible going higher. For many, yes, makes it harder to make money. And making money with borrowed money is going to be a sin from now on. If it weren't already. But there's always a bull market somewhere, as I say at the end of the show. We just need to find one or two sectors that can thrive even in this environment. It's harder, but it can be done. I've done it before.

  5. The other thing I will say here is, of course, we're 48 days out from the midterm elections and Trump has made no secret of his view that the cutting cycle that began in September of 2024, about a month and a half out from that election, was politically motivated to help the incumbent Democrats in the Democratic Party who had the White House. Now, at the September meeting, a hiking cycle for whatever duration beginning. I wouldn't be surprised to see the president cast that as politically motivated as well. One more thing I will say, if we haven't heard from him on Truth Social, he is traveling to North Carolina tonight in part to rally for the Republican Senate candidate there, Michael Watley. So if we haven't gotten anything on social media in reaction to this decision, I would imagine, guys, that that's going to be the opportunity.

  6. Right. Not to dump on Gen Z anymore, but this is an especially significant problem in that sort of age cohort. Because they're the ones who like to spend on experiences and travel and those kinds of things as, as we've seen sort of since the pandemic, you know?

  7. Well, I think the Democrats would rather have these numbers, uh, in early November than, uh, mid-September. But, uh, look, I, I just traveled across the country through a bunch of swing districts as you know, as we talked about while I was doing it. What I've seen is tremendous enthusiasm on the Democratic side and even hardcore Trump voters being critical about the Iraq war— the Iran war and inflation. And this unmatched enthusiasm is an issue for Republicans, as is the willingness for some Republicans to switch over and vote for Democrats in House races. Right now, you know, you call the election today, the Democrats are in a pretty good spot. Hot. Check back in a couple months.

  9. Yeah, well, here's the good news. Like my— what— when you become the CEO, I always call it my 4 Ps that are kind of what you need: people, passion, purpose, and persistence. Like the number one job as a CEO is actually putting together the right team that can work together and accomplish things. So the good news is I got a great team. And so, you know, the secret is they do a lot of the work, right? And then, yeah, uh, and then passion. You know, I always say like, you gotta love what you do because you, you spend a lot of time doing it. I mean, we're a global company. I spend a lot of time traveling all over the world. There isn't a week that goes by that I'm not on the road. Uh, and I spend a lot of weekends traveling cuz when you go to Asia, Middle East, Europe, other places like that, you end up sort of spending your weekend. So you gotta love what you do.

  10. Um, look at this. Says for a period ending September 2020, travelers could bring limited Cuban cigars back for personal use. That exemption was removed— exception was removed. Current CBP guidance says people subject to U.S. Jurisdiction may acquire Cuban goods while outside the United States in certain circumstances, but may not import Cuban-origin tobacco products into the country. Well, thank God these aren't Cuban.

  11. you have guys that were sleeping under tables while it was open. Yeah, because it was open 24 hours. So at nighttime, and they didn't get games, they would just crawl under a table and go to sleep because there's a whole downstairs area that was rarely used unless it was like really packed. But it was a real pool hall. A real 24-hour pool hall. I met so many degenerates there. There's a great book about that place. There's a great book called Playing Off the Rail by this guy David McCumber. He was Hunter S. Thompson's editor when Hunter S. Thompson was— I think he was working for a newspaper in the Pacific Northwest for a while. McCumber's a very, very interesting guy, great writer. And he took my friend Tony Anagone, who was a world-class professional pool player, and they traveled around the country gambling and wrote this book. It's a great book, really, like, really accurate, honest book.

  12. Stuart, let's assume that they do just pour money into it, which is what most people assume. That's the direction of travel. Now we're on this path. The Treasury Secretary made the argument and we played out some sound just there, and I'll read it verbatim. The best way to guarantee safety is that the creators are liable for what they build. Do you see that liability, those guardrails, as being sufficient?

  13. It was— we didn't have an August break. It was, it was pretty much pedal to the metal. A bunch of announcements, a bunch of travel and a bunch of financing.

  14. Well, I do think, you know, there's been a few themes as I've been on this show for the last couple of years. And there's no doubt there's a broader theme with society as you— as the AI technology plays a larger and larger role. You know, what are industries, what are activities, what are businesses that will have a very low chance of obsolescence? And I think it's as simple as that. I mean, the last, you know, 50, 100 years, there's been more and more leisure time, leisure time activities, whether it's the whole travel entertainment business and other activities like that. And I think people see the purview of sports especially mainstream sports and the aggregate followership. If you look at the top 100 shows in a year, you know, 95, 97 are sporting events, and that's probably unlikely to get disrupted.
