Jonathan Ferro · Bloomberg Surveillance · Bloomberg Surveillance TV: October 16th, 2026 · 2026-10-16I'm always searching for new ideas. This week we got not one but two of them. Practically came out of nowhere thanks to some very rigorous analyst upgrades. VF Corp and Contour Brands, a pair of apparel companies that I've been on the fence about. They both caught major upgrades this week. Yeah, these look very interesting to to me at a time of rising interest rates and rising oil prices. I rarely think, hey, let's get some apparel exposure, but these two just might be worth it. Let me walk you through them one by one to show you why I'm so intrigued. We'll start with VF Corp., which you may know as The North Face, Vans, Timberland, among a bunch of smaller brands. Lots of outerwear and footwear. On Tuesday morning, VF Corp., not, not one but two upgrades. That in itself is a pretty great tale. First, Truist took the stock from hold to buy, raising its price target from $14 to $20. At the time of the upgrade, the stock was just under $16. Then Piper Sandler took the stock from neutral to overweight, basically hold to buy again, and raised their price target from $16 to $20.
Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer 10/15/26 · 2026-10-15By this point, Vans sales have been nearly cut in half from the peak in fiscal 2022. Meanwhile, The North Face has been growing consistently for the past several years. Timberland's been putting up good numbers for a couple of years now, too. But the weakness in Vans is an albatross around their neck. The last time VF Corp reported in July, Vans was still down 9% on a constant currency basis. I bring all this up because when Truist and Piper Sandler upgraded VF Corp VF Corp on Tuesday. They both cited improvement from Vans. And remember, Piper's upgrade came from that all-important teen survey. Teens are wearing Vans. Why are they so confident about this long-suffering sneaker brand? Piper's teen survey showed that non-athletic brands are growing in popularity. The age of athleisure, it's over. For Vans specifically, after years of sinking in the ratings, it stabilized as the number 7 footwear brand for male teens in the latest survey, and it moved up up from number 10 to number 9 among upper-income male teens.
