You heard Elizabeth Troval report on Canada's oil exports to the U.S. amid growing tensions between the two countries. Again, part of those tensions include President Trump's threat of 50% tariffs on all cars, trucks, and auto parts from our northern their neighbors. Many popular car models like the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Charger are assembled in Canada and imported to the U.S. General Motors lost 1.1% on the news. Ford fell 3.4%. Stellantis dropped 3.5%. 2. Let's go talk about a supply chain bottleneck second-order effect, and it's on motor oil. That crazy? You think it's all about gasoline or diesel? No, it's, it's refined products. This is one of, of many issues that the war in the Middle East is creating. Car makers from Volkswagen, Stellantis, Toyota, they're all looking at alternative blends of fuel to put in their cars because the big refinery that supplied most of the industry was a Shell refinery in Qatar, which was hit by an Iranian missile back in March. So carmakers are running out of inventory of high-quality fuels that are needed in these engines. You know, internal combustion engines throughout the years have become more and more advanced. Even the most basic 4-cylinder, you know, cheap car has a pretty sophisticated engine that needs good oil. A lot of times synthetic oils that once again come from these refineries. Now the price of what are called Group 3 base oils has tripled since the pre— since before the war to about $4,000 per ton, both in Europe and here in the US. And they said even if the Strait of Hormuz opened tomorrow, there would still be shortages at least through early August, October. So carmakers are looking to find alternatives that meet their standards and will not ruin the engines of their customers and the cars that they're building, right? Because they're still building new cars. Now, they may be forced to become more flexible, but at the end of the day, this is a huge problem. You're already seeing delays in oil changes at certain dealerships, both in Japan and elsewhere, because of the shortage of these fuels. Stellantis is evaluating reformulated lubricants that still meet the industry standards but are different than what they normally get. German carmakers also secured necessary supply for now, but once again, they're running low and they're looking for alternatives that comply with their technical specifications and quality requirements. The one company that's done fairly well so far is Toyota. They secured alternative supplies many months ago, but once again, there are still issues that are building up. But because of the price of oil, this is feeding into, into the economy, into inflation.

  3. Welcome to Seeking Alpha's Wall Street Breakfast, where we cover the top news for investors every morning. It's good to be here with you on this Monday, August 17th. I'm Julie Morgan. Rocket Lab on Sunday said 8 satellite platforms it built for MDA Space have entered orbit. It marks the first deployment under a $143 million contract covering 17 spacecraft. The satellites launched August 15th at 9:12 PM from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Rocket Lab said it has established contact with all 8 spacecraft, which are generating power and operating as expected. Commissioning is now underway. MDA Space is the prime contractor overseeing the replenishment of Globalstar's existing satellite constellation. Globalstar uses the network to provide direct-to-device communications and Internet of Things connectivity. As for investors, the deployment represents an early operational milestone for one of Rocket Lab's larger satellite manufacturing contracts. Automakers such as Stellantis and Volkswagen are turning to new blends of lubricants as motor oil shortages worsen due to the war in Iran. The Financial Times is reporting that supply chains for the high-quality Group III base oils used to make motor oil were severely disrupted after Iran struck Shell's gas-to-liquids plant in Qatar in March. Prices of Group III base oils have nearly tripled from prewar levels to about $4,000 per ton in Europe and the U.S. Automakers, which ran out of inventories of the high-quality base oils, have since found alternative lubricant manufacturers, but even those supplies remain tight. The president of Colombia has asked President Trump to temporarily lift tariffs on Colombian goods. Colombia is trying to recover from a devastating earthquake that killed at least 289 people. The president, who took office shortly before the magnitude 7.4 quake, said he thanked Trump for U.S. emergency assistance during a phone call on Saturday. He also urged the administration to ease tariffs that are adding to the pressure on Colombian businesses. For investors, a temporary tariff suspension could support Colombia's exporters and reduce economic disruption from the disaster. Agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and transportation companies may face prolonged interruptions as the government rebuilds damaged homes, roads, and other infrastructure. The Trump administration has not publicly responded to the request. The United States has committed $26.5 million in assistance, including food, shelter, and medical supplies. The earthquake last Monday caused extensive damage in western Colombia.
