  3. That is Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Nieman. Last week the company said it's expecting sales this year to decline more than originally forecast. The recent outbreak of the parasite cyclospora led to more than 13,000 confirmed infections. Now, Sweetgreen wasn't linked to the outbreak. Even so, the company was already grappling with persistent traffic declines due in part to high prices. We turn next to Washington, where White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt will be stepping down from her post at the end of the month. President Trump announced the move today on Truth Social, saying Levitt wants to spend more time with her family. Trump said she will continue advising him from outside the White House as Republicans prepare for the midterm elections. Trump did not a successor to that post. Trump also said the U.S. has total control over the Strait of Hormuz, even though Iran continues to challenge shipping through this critical waterway. Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall has more from the White House.

  4. Tiffany Wilding with PIMCO was a guest on Bloomberg Surveillance. And that CPI data moved stocks higher as concerns eased over possible Fed rate hikes. We bring you the closing numbers each day here at Bloomberg. The S&P gained 20 points. NASDAQ up 143 points. The Dow lost 22 points. 10-year Treasury yield at 4.69%. The 2-year yield at 4.2%. Cisco Systems gave a sales projection for the current quarter exceeding Wall Street expectations, a sign of success for the company's efforts to supply a larger share of the AI data center market. Shares of Cisco up more than 4% in the postmarket. And the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gained about 2.5%, led by NVIDIA, which gained 3%. Alphabet shares were slightly lower in the regular session after Google introduced its latest smartphone lineup with subtle hardware and design improvements. It's going to cost more, though, because of a memory supply crunch. President Trump says Press Secretary Caroline Levitt will be leaving that job later this month. He made the announcement in a social media post. Levitt has served as press secretary since Trump returned to office in 2025, and she recently gave birth to her second child. Levitt said in her own social media post that the job was taking a toll on her family. The president did will not immediately name a successor. Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Nieman says the cyclospora outbreak has hurt sales even though the company doesn't even use iceberg lettuce.

  5. The outbreak has been isolated to iceberg lettuce from Mexico. We source all of our greens from the United States, and in a lot of ways, this is a moment where the Sweetgreen supply chain and the direct relationships with farmers is so critically important.

  6. While he says the outbreak had a huge impact on the quarter, he does expect improvements by the end of September. Nieman tells Bloomberg TV the company also removed jalapeños 23 restaurants for which there was a separate recall over salmonella concerns. Sweetgreen shares are now 1.5% higher in the postmarket. A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted Nick Reiner on murder charges in the killing of his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner. The indictment includes an allegation that Reiner was lying in wait before attacking them, which makes him eligible for the death penalty, but prosecutors have not decided if they'll seek it. Reiner himself has pleaded not guilty. The Reiners were stabbed to death in their Brentwood home in December. Lawyers for the man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk say he should not be eligible for the death penalty because the shooter hit the intended target. Defendant Tyler Robinson's attorneys say prosecutors have not proven that attendees of the event at Utah Valley University were in danger by the shooting. That would make it a capital crime. Robinson is charged with aggravated murder and has not entered a plea. That's news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Amy Morris, and this is Bloomberg.

  7. Yeah. And you know, it's interesting looking at Cava's results. I think it's less of a commentary on the consumer and more about how the strategy they're deploying is working in today's environment. So, you know, they had 9% same-store sales growth. Most of that was traffic-driven. Traffic was up more than 5% year over year. Pricing, product mix changes, that only accounted for about 3.7% of that growth. I mean, we're in an environment where rivals are forcing price hikes. They're dealing with empty dining areas in some cases, but Cava seems to be winning really on transaction volume. And, you know, we saw their revenue skyrocket even as a lot of the fast casual restaurants are really struggling. What was interesting was management on their earnings call said that a lot of their lower income customer tiers are actually generating the highest same restaurant sales results. And this is at a time where you've got a lot of the competing, say, fast food giants, fast casual, whatever you want to categorize them. As that are discounting, trying to retain that customer traffic. Well, Cava's absorbing that demographic organically, and instead of hiking prices to match inflation, they've actually minimized any type of price increases, which has been notable. They opened 17 net new restaurants during the quarter. Now they have just under 500 locations across, I believe it's 29 states. Their average unit volume has hit 3 million. And hate to mention it, but there we've got the recent cyclospora outbreak that has impacted competitors like Sweetgreen significantly. There was a bit of a dip in July, Cava's CFO said, but they said same store sales have already bounced back. So there's really, I think, a strong loyal customer base there. One final thing that also stuck out to me, we've seen some of these fast casual restaurants deploying automation. There's been concerns about what that would mean for the workforce, but they're really shifting employee focus away from chopping ingredients, but more towards customer service, digital order fulfillment. They have zero long-term debt, really healthy cash stockpile. It's a well-run business and I think at least today the stock seems to be actually responding in kind to that growth story. Yeah.
