Doug Krisner — Bloomberg News Now · US-Canada Trade Talks Breakdown, Trump's Iran Eco Pressure, More · 2026-08-23the Houthis are really interesting. Everyone considers them like a proxy of Iran. But when you talk to experts, they say, no, they're more of a junior partner because the Iranians have financed them. They've, you know, helped them with resources. But now they don't take orders from Iran. They cooperate with Iran, but they have their own command and control. They have their own weapons production. They're using part of the Yemen army. And so they work with Iran on common interests, but then they have their own interests. And that is in Yemen, they had that civil war with the Yemeni government and the supporters of the Yemeni government, and the Saudis were supporting them. And so if you remember, in about '22, '23, people were, especially the United States, but the West was really cracking down on the Saudis. Hey, too much humanitarian damage, civilian damage, you need to cut it out. And there's, you know, look, the Saudis are griping, listen, if you let us, you know, I don't know if they could have taken care of the Houthis at that time, we wouldn't be facing the threat they are now. So what the Yemeni, the Houthis are doing is with all of this closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the Saudis are rerouting all of their oil through the Red Sea. And so, and they're get looking to some of the other countries to produce too. If the Houthis cut that off, right, then there's no alternative route. And where is the oil going to go through? And trade from Asia also goes through that route too.
