Well, the majority of it, I would argue, has been going towards project generation and upstream development. There are instances of kind of midstream tolling operations, companies like Stardust that are saying, hey, we're not necessarily going to be miners per se, but we will do the Midstream, you know, we'll, we'll, and it remains to be seen how that works, right? How they can get that built, how they can process different types of feedstock at scale. So, um, similarly with like a lot of these DLE technologies, right? I mean, one type or combination of direct lithium extraction might work, for example, in the Smackover in Arkansas, but it wouldn't necessarily work in Alberta or the Salton Sea out in California for a host of different reasons. And so, you know, getting, getting that technology right and scaled is crucial. I'm not sure if refining economics alone are enough, right? Enough to work because you still, in my view, you still subject yourself to what has always killed investment here, which is the price volatility, right? Yeah. Spodumene at $600 a ton and spodumene at $2,600 a ton. Mean very different things, both good and bad. Speaking of winners and losers, right? To, to different players along that supply chain. Similarly, you know, I'm trying to think, I've been reading a lot of earnings and listening to a lot of earnings calls over the last week or so. And, you know, there's a company out of Vietnam, Massan, Massan, I'm going to mess it up, Massan Technologies, M-A-S-S-A-N. And, you know, they are a tungsten producer. And in the last quarter, you know, bear with me here, I might, might slightly mess this up, but as I understand it, they generated more operating profit in the last quarter because of sky-high tungsten prices than they have in their entire history. Okay. So you want to talk about winners? I mean, they're obviously like, the window is open, they're producing what the market wants and they're getting an elevated price. It won't always be like that. I mean, you know, the antimony price was $30 a pound not long ago, and today it's $10. And so it's good or bad for you depending upon where you are on the supply chain. Um, how do you insulate yourself against that?

And he decided to call us in to Tokyo Women's Medical University. We got there and basically we agreed to work together. So we now have a very prestigious advisor working with us.

I get excited anytime the general public is thinking about biology and this I Love Abuds framework of people are now mining the body for medicines. And maybe that's why people feel— you'll see these criticisms and they're understandable. All these people that wouldn't take a prescription drug will take these peptides. I think that when people hear that something's of the body, even if it's a synthetic form of of the body, they're more likely to take it. And I can't quite relate to that psychology, but I sort of get it. I sort of get it. It's not some stardust thing. At the same time, you're not going to see huge effects from any of these things except perhaps pinealon. That's still anecdotal. And the GLPs from Red Truthide, those have really robust effects. Everything else, BVC can have its potential role in healing for some people, but there are no trials. And by the way, No one's going to do a trial and no one's going to do it properly. I keep hearing, "Oh, there's going to be a hamstring injury trial." No one wants to put the time and effort. And having run a clinical trial and having done experiments in preclinical animal format for a long time, it's a lot of work to do properly. You need to know what the endpoints are, control.

So the biggest issue with the whole suite of technologies that are needed to reduce or remove global greenhouse gas emissions is that they're kind of a collective action problem. Essentially, everybody has to act or it barely works. Solar radiation management, or solar geoengineering, is kind of the mirror image of that. By one estimate, dispersing about 3 million tons of reflective particles into the stratosphere could cool the planet by 1.5 degrees Celsius for around $30 billion. 1.5 degrees Celsius is a ton. And to put that in terms that we use a lot, that is less than the cost of a single hyperscale data center these days. But that number is exactly why a lot of pretty serious people are alarmed about the whole concept. If cooling the entire planet costs what one hyperscale campus costs, this stops being something that only a coalition of governments could possibly attempt. In theory, one country could do it alone, or one company, or one billionaire, or dare I say trillionaire. The economist Scott Barrett called climate change a free rider problem. Everyone has to wait for somebody else to pay. Solar geoengineering, he said, is a free driver problem. It only takes one. The cheapness isn't a footnote, it's the whole governance question, to say nothing of all the technical questions, does it work, and the side effect questions, what effects does it cause, which is what makes my guest today unusual. Stardust is a private company building a proprietary particle and the system to put it into the stratosphere, aiming to be ready this decade. They say they will not deploy without governments, Plural. And the question is whether a technology this powerful and really this cheap should be built inside a company at all. And if so, what are the guardrails we should put around it? Yanay Yadvob is the CEO and co-founder of Stardust. How the tech works, what it might cause, and who gets to decide. That's coming up next.
Shail Khan · Catalyst with Shayle Kann · Inside the most sophisticated plan for solar geoengineering · 2026-07-01Okay, so first of all, let's start by saying, Shail, this is not a new concept, right? I know that you had several episodes discussing it. We didn't invent the concept. So maybe taking one step back, I'll walk through the concept very quickly and then what we believe is unique about our technology and our approach. So the idea essentially is to create a shielding layer I often like to think about it kind of, you know, the ozone layer, which is protecting Earth and composed of ozone molecules and protecting us from malicious sun rays. So to add one additional layer, which we plan that will be composed by Stardust particles and will protect us from overheating. By reflecting a tiny portion of incoming sunlight. Less than 1% is enough to essentially stabilize temperature, and you can even take temperature down a little bit. So this is the fundamental concept. And when we came across it the first time, it was like 4 years ago. First of all, we were very curious at that time. The option that people were discussing was sulfuric acid. And the reason is that this is what volcanoes emit when, and whenever there is a volcanic eruption which is powerful enough, it creates a similar effect naturally. These tiny particles go above the weather layer, create the shielding layer in this way, stabilize temperature, And I think the first question that we were asking ourselves is, can we do better? Because, you know, sulfuric acid comes with— it is known to do the effect we want to do, but it comes with a very long list of unintended consequences. It's toxic, it induces acid rain, it impacts the ozone layer. And also the uncertainties are very high. And we were asking ourselves, maybe there is a better approach. And I think that the way we looked at it is kind of, I would say, to look at it from the end backward. We were asking ourselves, you know, a question back then which we didn't know the answer. But let's say we will be successful in developing this technology. What will be questions that people like you, the policymakers, that the general public will come and ask us, right? How can we make sure that this is safe? What happens when these particles eventually fall on the ground?

But the bottom line is that we believe that for the first time you have a foundation for what may be a safe and controllable option for, for zoology engineering. This is the reason we started Stardust. And again, still a lot of work to do. And I would say ideally in 2 or 3 years you'll have also 3 or 4 other entities, either universities or companies or, or hybrid, that will develop their own option because you want to make sure that whenever governments will come to the point they'll need to seriously consider options to stabilize temperature, they have more than one option, that they have safe options.

I think that all decision-making, but exactly as you were saying, both with respect to the R&D and testing phase and with respect to deployment should be done by governments. I don't believe there is any other way this could work. We would definitely not participate in any endeavor that won't be conducted under, I would say, clear and strict regulation and adequate governance by governments. This is stated at our website. I keep saying it every interview. Our investors are aligned with this. This is a very, like, as much as it is important to us to develop safe technology. It is important to us to make sure that this will be done the right way. By the way, I think it's also the prudent way to run this company. But also on the value perspective, I think this is the right way to do. I want to mention something short with respect to the beginning of your question, saying it's very cheap. Anyone— not anyone, but many players can do it. I'd say there are many ways you can deploy this technology the wrong way. We started Stardust because we believed that governments need good options, right? Like if you want to start dispersing toxic material in the sky, you don't need Stardust, you don't need all the sophistication, you don't need governance. So the, the— I believe that having a safe option essentially lowers the risk that people will go the wrong way because there is an alternative. Or to say it otherwise, if we didn't have options, I would say that the likelihood that someone would go the wrong way would be much higher.

But you know, who's doing it. But the other half of it is who is doing it as Tom Cruise. And I lit up as soon as he was on the screen because he is a movie stardust. So they big guess marketing wise, they know what they're doing.

There is a US Israeli company called Stardust Solutions that's raised $75 million in funding. Stardust recently revealed what it calls biodegradable particles that could be used to reflect sunlight. Made out of calcium carbonate, a compound found in limest and amorphous silica, an anti caking agent used as a food additive. Though so far the particles have only been tested indoors. And then there have been several academic field research projects, some of which never fully got off the ground. So from what we can tell, Luke and Andrew are the only ones actually attempting solar geoengineering in the real world, even if it's not taken seriously by everyone.
