Uh, I just thought it was an interesting space, and I had space that I already had Rocket Lab, so I thought that would be a fun avionics place to play. Okay. But then SpaceX just announced that they're thinking about go— they're entering the market in the same space, and I'm afraid they're going to get smashed.
Speaker C — InvestTalk · Regulation catches up to digital assets · 2026-08-25I'm confused about one of the stocks I have. I've been reading a lot of very positive articles about this company. However, last month its CEO sold $82 million of his shares of the stock. Should I follow his lead and sell my shares of Rocket Lab?
Speaker C — Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer 8/24/26 · 2026-08-24Uh, I'm not a big fan of Rocket Lab. We like Hawkeye 360. Be careful, it does have a big lockup expiration. I think Rocket Lab is too speculative, and I think that, well, maybe you should follow the CEO. I did not know that. Let's go to Randy in Nevada, please.
Jim Cramer — Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer 8/24/26 · 2026-08-24Welcome back to Motley Fool Hidden Gems Investing. You know, we normally don't take questions from our mailbag here in the second segment, but we're mixing things up today. And the question that we got is a little bit long, so rather than read it, I'm gonna summarize. But essentially this listener says that they listen to our show every day and they love it. So first of all, thank you for that. Sometimes you wonder on this side of the microphone if there's anybody out there, but listening to this show, this listener found the company Rocket Lab, the space company, ticker symbol RKLB, found the stock from listening to our show when it was trading in the single digits. And of course it's much higher than that now. And so, The question was essentially, I found this stock listening to your show right before it skyrocketed. No pun intended. Found it right before it skyrocketed. And the question is, what kind of screening can we do? So what kind of things do we screen for in a stock to find it right before it skyrockets? Find a momentum stock before it has momentum. And I just wanted to say here as the host, I wanna reframe this because that sounds a little bit like looking for something at the right time and finding that momentum. And we're really not a big fan of stock screeners, many of us, because there's an intrinsic flaw. They are always looking backwards at what the company has done in measuring it against that. Whereas as long-term investors, we are thinking more about the future and not so much about momentum, but what are the things that are actually creating durable long-term shareholder value over time? And adding to those businesses. However, within The Motley Fool universe, within Hidden Gems in particular, we are increasingly turning to AI tooling to create scores for many things in investing to help us in our research process. And so I thought today it would be a good chance to talk to Matt and Rachel just kind of about the things that they like and some of the scoring that we're bringing to the table and how it relates to what we're talking about here with this listener question. So, Matt, I think we're gonna go to you here first.
Jon Quast — Motley Fool Hidden Gems Investing · Berkshire Hathaway Hasn’t Done This in Over 3 Years · 2026-08-17If there was an easy way to identify what stocks were going to 10x over the next 2 years, all 3 of us would've retired on a beach somewhere a while ago. There's no easy way. So I wanna preface this by saying that and putting that in, in very, very honest context. But since the listener brought up Rocket Lab, let's use that as an example. So consider what Rocket Lab looked like. When it was trading at say $8 versus where it is today. So even before the climb, it was already showing some of the things that I like to look for or screen for, if you want to use that term, to identify the next breakout candidates. Not only growing revenue, but accelerating revenue growth. Even though Rocket Lab's revenue was small and still is relatively small for its market cap, it was accelerating. Its unit economics were improving. That's definitely something to look at, especially in an unprofitable company. The unit economics will tell you how the path to profitability is going to start to emerge. A growing backlog of business. It operates in a very large market that's misunderstood by most investors. A lot of people really just don't understand the space economy just yet. They have a founder leader who has a lot of skin in the game. It's one of the big principles we look for in hidden gems. I would suggest using things like this as kind of triggers for further research into a company, not just— as John mentioned, screeners are backward looking. So not things that should say, okay, buy the stock today. But on the topic of AI tooling, I'm going to use kind of a different direction. So some smart ways that I like to use AI to my advantage when looking at stocks, especially if I identify something that looks like Rocket Lab did back then. So I'll use AI to help me read and summarize earnings calls and especially 10-Ks, which are annual reports. I can't tell you if even before AI have I ever read a 10-K from COVID to cover. I don't know if you guys have, you have more time on your hands than me if that's the case, because they're well over 100 pages long.
Matt Frankel — Motley Fool Hidden Gems Investing · Berkshire Hathaway Hasn’t Done This in Over 3 Years · 2026-08-17And just some of the things that we're highlighting here, these are things that we are scoring for, creating scores for that a screener's not gonna pick up. Things like leadership or revenue growth acceleration, these little nuggets, these little ticks that are in the data and we score them. And then based on how things score in our databases, then that's normally room for more human research that goes into it, right? We're not automating the decisions. Those databases of course are open to some of our members. But Matt, I, I do want to turn it back over to you here because we are talking about something that was a big home run, such as Rocket Lab, and there are many others in The Motley Fool universe. But just to point out that Rocket Lab up over 1,300% over the last 3 years. So if you invested $10,000, in other words, you'd have more than $140,000 now. We'd all love that. But listen, I was looking and it's dropped about 40% or more 6 different times in the last 3 years. That's roughly once every 6 months. And, you know, losing those big things on the way to big gains. What do you have to say to investors about that?
Jon Quast — Motley Fool Hidden Gems Investing · Berkshire Hathaway Hasn’t Done This in Over 3 Years · 2026-08-17So Rocket Lab drew down, you're correct, 40% or more, 6 times in the past 3 years, including a 47% drawdown since it hit that all-time high in May. So very recently, and this is a winning stock we're talking about. If it's not going quite as well, you could have even worse drawdowns. I generally suggest that when you're looking for home run stocks in particular, You don't have to think this way if you're investing in, say, Berkshire Hathaway, but be sure to size your position so that a 50% drawdown won't seriously damage your portfolio. So be sure to keep your individual risk tolerance in mind, your long-term goals in mind. Someone who's in their 60s and getting ready to retire has a completely different outlook on investing in the next home run stocks than someone in their 20s or 30s. So keep that in mind. But yeah, definitely plan on drawdowns even if things are going well.
Matt Frankel — Motley Fool Hidden Gems Investing · Berkshire Hathaway Hasn’t Done This in Over 3 Years · 2026-08-17Welcome to Seeking Alpha's Wall Street Breakfast, where we cover the top news for investors every morning. It's good to be here with you on this Monday, August 17th. I'm Julie Morgan. Rocket Lab on Sunday said 8 satellite platforms it built for MDA Space have entered orbit. It marks the first deployment under a $143 million contract covering 17 spacecraft. The satellites launched August 15th at 9:12 PM from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Rocket Lab said it has established contact with all 8 spacecraft, which are generating power and operating as expected. Commissioning is now underway. MDA Space is the prime contractor overseeing the replenishment of Globalstar's existing satellite constellation. Globalstar uses the network to provide direct-to-device communications and Internet of Things connectivity. As for investors, the deployment represents an early operational milestone for one of Rocket Lab's larger satellite manufacturing contracts. Automakers such as Stellantis and Volkswagen are turning to new blends of lubricants as motor oil shortages worsen due to the war in Iran. The Financial Times is reporting that supply chains for the high-quality Group III base oils used to make motor oil were severely disrupted after Iran struck Shell's gas-to-liquids plant in Qatar in March. Prices of Group III base oils have nearly tripled from prewar levels to about $4,000 per ton in Europe and the U.S. Automakers, which ran out of inventories of the high-quality base oils, have since found alternative lubricant manufacturers, but even those supplies remain tight. The president of Colombia has asked President Trump to temporarily lift tariffs on Colombian goods. Colombia is trying to recover from a devastating earthquake that killed at least 289 people. The president, who took office shortly before the magnitude 7.4 quake, said he thanked Trump for U.S. emergency assistance during a phone call on Saturday. He also urged the administration to ease tariffs that are adding to the pressure on Colombian businesses. For investors, a temporary tariff suspension could support Colombia's exporters and reduce economic disruption from the disaster. Agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and transportation companies may face prolonged interruptions as the government rebuilds damaged homes, roads, and other infrastructure. The Trump administration has not publicly responded to the request. The United States has committed $26.5 million in assistance, including food, shelter, and medical supplies. The earthquake last Monday caused extensive damage in western Colombia.
