The Anthropic deal, $9 billion cloud deal with Riot, this is is the Bitcoin miner that now apparently sells AI data center capacity. Is Anthropic at a disadvantage compared to OpenAI because of compute?

Deal talks show no signs of progress. Where are oil prices going to go from here? A key question. And you just heard us talking about this, the Bitcoin miner Riot Platform stock surging. Another one of those deals. Of course, this had once been a Bitcoin miner. Now what is it about? Well, data centers, $9 billion, in fact. In compute power with Anthropic. Sign up.

You don't sleep with the fishes? No, not sleep, just swim with them. I don't sleep with them. All right, I'm going to move us on now to this deal that we mentioned at the top of the show. Riot, it's been around for a while. Yeah, a former Bitcoin miner. We see this a lot. Of course, what do they have? Well, they've got powered shells, right? They've got access to power and compute. So, power, I want— what do you think they want to do now? Of course, they want to become part of the compute for the big— well, whoever will take it. In this case, it's Anthropic. They didn't say Anthropic, but others have reported it. I know it as well. It's the Rockdale campus. They do have another significant campus that we haven't gotten an announcement on. So there is a waiting game there. We're talking about what is it, 191 megawatts of capacity and a 20-year deal to supply that to Anthropic, which of course is endlessly looking for more and more compute, right, as it needs to provide its customers with more and more of that and charge them for it. Riot. But Riot stock, people, the investor base has been waiting for this and they're still waiting for, as I said, that other campus they have as well to announce a similar type deal. As for Anthropic, what do you think about that?

It's good to be here with you on this Tuesday, August 11th. I'm Julie Morgan. Anthropic has reportedly struck a $9.1 billion deal with Riot Platforms, a Bitcoin mining company that recently began selling AI data center capacity. Bloomberg News reported that Riot disclosed Monday that it had secured a 20-year deal to supply 100 megawatts of capacity from its Rockdale, Texas campus to a leading frontier AI company. According to the report, that company is Anthropic. To put this into perspective for you, 191 megawatts of capacity is enough to energize roughly 143,000 homes at any given time. Riot is up 20% in pre-market trading. The agreement reportedly runs through June of 2048, Riot expects the contract to generate $9.1 billion in revenue, while two 5-year extension options could take total sales to as much as $16.1 billion. Plug Power is up 11% in premarket action. Shares climbed after the hydrogen and fuel cell company reported Q2 results that beat expectations, achieved near breakeven gross margin, and raised its fiscal year '26 revenue growth target. Gross margin improved to roughly breakeven from -31% a year earlier, while operating expenses fell about 50% year over year to $62 million. The company now targets 2026 revenue growth of 15-16%. SpaceX closed 4.2% higher at $138.74 on Monday, moving back above the company's $135 IPO price for the first time since July 16th. SpaceX is currently down 1% in premarket action, still above $135. The stock had closed below its IPO price for several weeks after first slipping under the $135 level on July 16th. Monday's gain extended a sharp rebound from its $104.83 intraday low on August 3rd. The move also marks SpaceX's highest close since July 13th, although the stock remains well below its post-IPO highs. Now for a look at a few other articles that are trending. Doug Krizner — Bloomberg News Now · Trump Makes New Iran Demands, Nvidia Secures Wall Street Funding, More · 2026-08-11So, what I do is I pull back, and I really go back to the late 1970s in Houston, which was a really interesting time in place. Place. It was flush with oil money. It was a place with big, you know, over-the-top characters like him. And he had arrived there. He had begun as an Austin cop in the early '70s, and he hadn't lasted more than, I think, about 18 months. He got caught writing hot checks, and he was very quietly dismissed from the force. He wasn't prosecuted. And he ends up in Houston, And this is where he's passing himself off as an airline executive, and he's spending lavishly, and he's wearing these three-piece suits and gold jewelry, and he's just this hilarious character. And he gets a little ahead of himself, and his financial crimes grew as he went, from writing a hot check for $50 to much, much more serious crimes. He would— By the '80s, we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars, which was— it's a lot of money now. It was really a lot of money back then. And some worse crimes, which we'll talk about later. But he eventually ends up in the Harris County Jail in 1978, and he's there at the same time as a defendant from a case that was known as the Moody Park Three. And this was a case in which Some very idealistic young people were protesting the fact that Houston cops had gotten virtually no punishment for the murder of a young Latino man who was beaten and killed in their custody. And these activists were charged with inciting an enormous riot that really was just the result of a wellspring of emotion in the Latino community in Houston. It wasn't because of 3 young people, you know, trying to get them to riot. Riot. But anyway, they were put on trial and sort of made an example of, and there was no evidence, there was no case. And Paul Skalnik is sitting in jail very close to one of these defendants, Tom Hershey. And, you know, as a former cop, he's able to size up who in the jail is the most valuable to prosecutors. Who do they most want to get a conviction against, or most want to get a long sentence for. And so he quickly says to them that Tom Hirschi has confessed to him. And he ends up being put on the stand at the Moody Park Three trial, and he tells this sort of ludicrous story of overhearing him say, you know, all the things that you would need to convict about how he had confessed to planning this, and how he incited people, how he had given people alcohol, all these things. And long story short, the prosecution gets a conviction. And that was sort of, I think, the lesson to Skalnik, that this would be his calling card. And he was immediately released. So, while these other people are saddled with, well, two felonies and a misdemeanor, he walks free. And that was really the blueprint for him moving forward. And from there, he moved on to Florida.
