  2. I mean, if anybody wants to take a lesson out of the book of Dolly Parton, it would be to move through life with grace and humility. Um, she is somebody whose personal life was never splashed across the tabloids. She had a very private and loving marriage to her longtime husband, Carl Dean, for 60 years, who she lost last year. And this was a woman who, again, like you said, an incredible businesswoman who paved the way for so many of the stars of today. When you look at someone like Taylor Swift, who writes so many of her hit songs. So did Dolly Parton, writing "I Will Always Love You" or "The Coat of Many Colors" or "9 to 5," which really was an anthem during the women's liberation movement. And when you also talk, uh, which you just heard moments ago, about how she, you know, was subtly supporting trans rights with a song in 2005 that was actually nominated for an Oscar for the movie Transamerica— I mean, again, she said at one point in an interview with Larry King in 2017 She write— she said, I keep saying, if you're the fine Christian that you think you are, why are you judging people? That's God's job. And so she didn't shy away from politics completely, but it was the way in which Dolly Parton moved, moved through the world. And I think that's why so many people are pouring out tributes to her today. And really so many of us can just get behind Dolly Parton because she really was a life well lived and somebody, um, that although had strong beliefs, she did it with grace.

  3. From Wired, this is The Big Interview. I'm Katie Drummond. I'll admit, I don't have a ton of time for TV binging, but recently I've gone all in on Fallout. It's based on a series of video games, of course, and is set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where citizens are forced to live underground. Fallout is among a series of projects that director, writer, and producer Jonathan Nolan has helmed or worked on. His IMDb is a list of some of the most prescient representations of where we may be headed, from Memento to Interstellar, From Westworld to now Fallout, Jonah is one of few creatives in Hollywood who consistently evolves how tech, science, and AI are portrayed in film and TV. Despite, or maybe because of all this, the Oscar and Emmy nominated multi-hyphenate tells me he's still a techno-optimist, although he will never use AI to write for him. Here's our conversation. Jonathan Nolan, welcome to The Big Interview.

  4. 100%. Now that it's here, yeah, or at least one version. And then all the conversations about LLMs versus world models versus, you know, I mean, there's a lot that's going to happen in the next few years and we may really wind up in a very different place to where we expect. I mean, almost certainly we will. I think an observation that I sort of started and then was bounced back and forth with a friend who's leading one of the leading companies was we spent a day working with his team talking about what you can do with these things, what are the applications for it? Because I think that is one of the bigger questions. And it occurred to me, it's like, I think for the first time in a very long time, there may have been moments like this in the middle of the Second World War with so many technologies just kind of pouring out of the war effort. But this feels like one idea obviously expressed, you know, the amount of brilliance over 40 years to get to this place. You don't want to, you don't want to, it's kind of like the overnight success, right? The actor, ingenue, singer who, you know, finally gets the Oscar, Grammy, whatever, has been doing this for 20 years. So these, these, you know, neural nets have been around for a very, very long time, not an overnight success, but pretty much to your point, 2.5 years ago, suddenly went from an obscure talking point for computer scientists to an everyday fact for all of our kids, everyone, everyone all over the place. And it occurred to me that unlike some of these technologies over the years, this is more like an alien spaceship crash-landed on the face of the planet. And each of these companies and all of us are exploring the ruins of it. And we kind of walk into one room and we're like, oh shit, I can do teleportation. You go to another room and it's like, okay, make movies, right? Yeah. It's less like we're making these things and more like we're sort of stumbling upon them because we've created something so powerful and so recursive that it can spew out almost weekly or monthly these wonders.

Now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited premium wireless for $15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made $15 bills, but it turns out that's very illegal. Uh, so there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try at mintmobile.com/switch.
