And right now, the 10-year in the US is 5.3%, the 30-year is 5.6%. Somebody has to buy that debt, and that debt has profound trickle-down effects, Sachs, on how entrepreneurship, how businesses are built. On Wednesday, 10-year yields dropped a few basis points. After we had some strong demand, but this has been trending up and up. Polymarket says 79% chance of another rate hike in 2026. This is going to have a profound impact if austerity ever came to America, Sachs. We have not had that really difficult medicine, you know, forced upon the American public, but we did see it Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain. We had a dry run of this after the Great Financial Crisis where they had to implement austerity measures as part of the EU retirement age, et cetera.
Jason Calacanis · All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · Is Claude Conscious? Pope Rejects, Model Welfare Movement, OpenAI's Math Backlash, France Riots · 2026-10-10On DOTS and Muse and Grokbot, I think that what's incredible is you can just turn these things loose on very practical use cases that makes your life better. The best example of this that I saw was just last night in the poker game. Someone was describing to me that they in Grokbot said, save me money. And it just kind of goes through their inbox, it finds all of these different things, and it went and canceled a couple of subscriptions and it changed their phone plan, and all of a sudden they're saving a few thousand dollars a year. So there's these very practical, again, it's just software. If we take out all this philosophical stuff that we started with at the beginning, it's just software and it's very useful software. So, and by the way, like, if you think about what— how we use it, Jason, you and I, we have, you know, we use Athena.
Chamath Palihapitiya · All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · Is Claude Conscious? Pope Rejects, Model Welfare Movement, OpenAI's Math Backlash, France Riots · 2026-10-10The Trump administration has moved to keep the brutality of ICE's deportation campaign out of the headlines. Is it working? From WNYC in New York, this is On the Media, I'm Michael Loewinger. Also on this week's show, right-wing activists try to broaden the definition of who does and doesn't belong here.
Micah Loewinger · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09It's all coming up. After this. Hey, it's Micah. Before we get into the show, just a quick message. When we're talking about what we want to cover on On the Media each week, we ask ourselves as a team, what will help our listeners understand what's happening in the world? That means separating the important stories from the noise, digging beneath the headlines, getting past the hype, going deep to talk through thorny issues. Like we did last week on the show when we discussed President Trump's ban on news organizations from the White House briefing room and the resulting boycott by the TV press pool. We were excited to see that brief moment of solidarity between news outlets because it demonstrated that standing together really is an effective way to fight for journalism and the First Amendment. On the Media also counts on solidarity. Solidarity with you.
Micah Loewinger · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09Donations from listeners have always been crucial to the show, allowing us to remain free of influence or commercial considerations that are central to so many corporate news outlets. It's the time of year when we ask for your support, and that's why I'm coming to you right now to ask you to donate to this program. And to sweeten the deal, we have something really cool, a brand new On the Media mug. It's been years since we've had a new mug. This one is white and features a beautiful line drawing of Brooke and me in front of our microphones on one side and the On the Media logo on the other. And you can get yours with a donation of $12 per month or more today. I'll be honest, at first I was sort of horrified by the idea of having my face on a mug, but it's actually pretty cute and snagging one is a great way to support our show.
Micah Loewinger · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09To see the mug and make your donation, go to onthemedia.org/donate or text OTM to 83763. That's onthemedia.org/donate. Thank you so much for your support and onto the show. From WNYC in New York, this is On the Media. Brooke Gladstone is out this week. I'm Michael Loewinger. As of Thursday, a New Yorker was the latest victim of an ICE shooting. Cell phone video shows 28-year-old Oscar Bilgal handcuffed on the ground after being shot by an ICE agent in his SUV while his 5-year-old son sat in the backseat. Police say they believe one agent fired at least 7 rounds, hitting Bilgal in the neck. President Trump's brutal campaign to round up and deport hundreds of thousands of people has, for the most part, slipped out of the headlines recently.

Speaker F · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09This is On the Media. I'm Michael Loewinger. On Thursday, the president wrote a post on Truth Social targeting the Somali immigrant community in Minnesota.
Micah Loewinger · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09There are about 84,000 people of Somali descent living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, around 87% of whom are citizens. Maybe this is a desperate move of a president who is polling badly, but it's also true that he and his party have been making it clear that they want to decide who gets to live here and who is truly American. One of the right-wing activists leading the charge is Christopher Rufo. He helped amplify the lies that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, a city later targeted by an ICE campaign. On a recent episode of his podcast, Rufo pushed for more extreme immigration policies.

His book is titled To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right. Coming up, a political scientist comes to a startling and personal realization about this country's polarization problem. This is On the Media.

Speaker F · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09This is On the Media. I'm Michael Lowinger. We just heard about how ever more extreme rhetoric is growing in ostensibly intellectual conservative But when mainstream news outlets write about the public resistance to this current administration, they sometimes describe the problem using the P-word.

Micah Loewinger · On the Media · Polarization Is Not Our Biggest Problem · 2026-10-09Well, it did have a, you know, it's kind of a relative thing. It had a better quarter than most in that industry. But I don't want to touch that industry. I don't want to touch anything leisure. I mean, like, I don't want— I think Hawaiian is bottoming and that's terrific. And new management is doing a good job. I think you could make a couple of bucks, but it's a trade and I'm looking for investments and it is just a trade. And thank you for watching. It's been watched forever. I think it's fantastic. Bonds are coloring everything. We just have to accept that this is a different market when rates are this high and climbing. And then we can start thinking about the the actual earnings of the companies I just showed you. On Mad Money tonight, news of OpenAI's revenue shortfall sent some tech stocks really tumbling yesterday. Is it really that big a deal? I'm going to crunch the numbers. Then earnings out of Delta are showing a bright spot in the airline industry. Don't miss my analysis of the latest quarter. And yesterday was a reminder that if you're not diversified, holy cow, you're not going to be able to stay in this market. And that's why we're playing a round of Am I Diversified? David Kramer.
