Yeah, first of all, I think both of these paths are great and they can create tremendous value. We've always been really excited about building infrastructure for the industry. Our bet when we started to go back to those results in Matt's house, you know, a few years ago was that this is how most future drugs are going to be discovered. And if that's the case, somebody needs to go and like build that infrastructure and make it happen. I think part of this too is a lot of our founding team, like including Matt and I, had worked in companies before where we had built these full-stack drug pipelines, right? And we were building AI models, we were putting those drugs into the clinic. Again, we're pretty bitter lesson pilled as well. And our thinking was, as the models get better, we want to be spending more of the money making better models as opposed to diverting those resources into clinical trials and things like that. And one of the interesting things about our business models, as the models get better, actually wins us the right to continue investing more in them, right? And you have partnerships with these pharma companies that are paying off today and allow us to continue to invest in it. So it's a much more scalable business in that way. And I just think about the ultimate impact that we can create for the world is a lot larger. We've always wanted to just partner broadly with the ecosystem. It goes back to this point about fooling yourself in biology. If you work on a small number of drug targets, you might come up with the most exquisite molecules. Creating a ton of value for the world by doing that. But you might miss the forest for the trees because maybe your model doesn't generalize to the other 500 molecules that people are going to make that year. And if you go in and partner with people, you just, you just can't fool yourself. Like, you look at our partners, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Argenix, Pfizer, like these are not companies that are, you know, they, they take this stuff for granted. Like, you have to really deliver on these partnerships for them to take you seriously. And that means it can't just work like some of the time.
Josh — Training Data · Chai Discovery's Bitter Lesson: Drug Design Is Another Scaling Problem · 2026-08-04I think two things are true with ML and AI. We are better able to understand the root cause of disease, mechanism pathway, and kind of the industry nomenclature. And with a better understanding of mechanisms and pathways, we can repurpose molecules, whether they're biologics or peptides, or small molecules against those where we know that they are known to be effective. The other, which is simultaneously true, historically, we have the vast majority of known targets for disease biology have been quote unquote undruggable. And so it's not a question of taking a shelved asset from Pfizer or Novartis or Lilly. It's a question of we just don't know how to design the molecules to actually perturb those proteins intracellularly or extracellularly. Literally yet. Sure. My suspicion is in the next 5 to 6 to 7 years with the companies in the, in the modes of the Chais of the world, for example, we will have technologies to perturb what we want to perturb. And so we'll both be able to repurpose when there is a shelved asset against kind of our new knowledge of biology, but then also leverage generative AI and ML to create molecules to perturb biology where maybe the shelved assets don't quite yet exist.

Today feels like earnings season to me because GM with a great quarter, up big, sells off. 3M with a great quarter starts high and then goes even higher. We are seeing the kinds of moves that remind me that there are other opportunities besides tech to make money that are not connected to SK Hynix, which is leading up that whole commodity part of tech. And I particularly like, for instance, how the financials are acting. They act great. Maybe healthcare with Novartis. So what we're seeing is some really interesting non-commodity tech. And I'm including non-commodity tech, by the way, Intel, which got its first real client for its foundry. And it's a good one.

Sarah Eisen — Squawk on the Street · 11AM Hour: President Trump Meets with the President of Lebanon, Novartis CEO on Earnings & Alphabet's AI Lineup 7/21/26 · 2026-07-21We haven't personally experienced as Novartis any changes, but I think with some of the shifts now, we're certainly hopeful that for some of the opportunities that we have where we could get an accelerated approval like the drug I just mentioned for FSHD, we want to have that conversation because I think in cases where a drug has demonstrated at least indications of efficacy and is otherwise save. Historically, the FDA, especially in high unmet need areas, has been open for accelerated approvals. Last year with the previous leadership, we saw that pull back. That was a big surprise in the industry. I think we're all hoping now that the FDA gets back to its historical approach on this. When there's a high unmet need and you demonstrate the potential to help patients, we err on the side of making the medicine available.
