If you don't have communists and fascists in the same department having tea together, something has gone wrong because scientists are very extreme. And Ted Kaczynski, you know, wrote a marvelous story, for example, called Ship of Fools about a bunch of people overly concerned about political correctness on a ship that then you know, runs into an iceberg because nobody's actually paying attention to the running of the ship. They're having questions about—

Now, my guess is that that's pretty easy, right? Think about it. You need 12 nucleotides to code for 4 amino acids at the exact right place in spike protein, and that's enough to shut down Earth. This is high-leverage science. And my claim is, before we decide that what we want is, let's get back to kicking ass and taking names, let us at least pause and say, most people are ignorant of how much power is present with a little bit of scientific knowledge. There's a marvelous scene in Breaking Bad where the protagonist named Heisenberg takes what appears to be crystal meth and throws it in the office of a psychopath named Tuco. And Tuco says, "Well, what the hell was that that caused that massive explosion?" I forget whether it was lead azide or mercury fulminate or one of these extremely volatile compounds. Do you have any idea how easy it is to make black powder? I ask modern audiences, Nobody knows that it's 75% saltpeter, 10% sulfur, and 15% charcoal. The anarchist cookbook has gone out of discussion. The power of science, the leverage of science is so profound that we should at least ask the question, what if you had nuclear weapons that didn't require centrifuges? What if they're easy things to do? That high school students could do. You remember this guy who scavenged the americium in smoke detectors to build a working reactor, and I think it was Brooklyn. Okay. Well, nobody thought, collect 218 smoke detectors and you can have a working nuclear reactor. So my claim is that if you want to think about Walter White as a paradigm, you have to go back to something called the United States versus Progress, the Progressive magazine in which the Teller-Ulam design for the thermonuclear weapon was put forward by a publication. And the government said, no, no, this is restricted data. We need prior injunction. This is the most dangerous piece of geometry. This is Stan Ulam's work. And the whole idea is, is that if you're going to use a fission device, chemical shell compresses subcritical fissile material to create a detonator out of an atomic bomb.
Eric Weinstein — All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · Eric Weinstein: The Scientific Precariat, China's Brain Drain, Physics Stagnation, String Theory's Collapse & UAPs · 2026-08-26It is the map and not the territory. It is a great great model. Whoever comes next has to recover it, but there is no initial singularity due to the Big Bang, nor is there a singularity in the center of a black hole called the Schwarzschild singularity. That's where our ignorance shows. We have two singularities we can't get rid of inside the theory, so you have to go outside of it. But the thing is, it's so perfect that nobody can figure out You know, sort of in the first 4 seconds of a physics talk, you say, let X13 be a spacetime manifold. Well, okay, it's over. That's the sarcophagus. And you're already in an Einsteinian frame of thought. And so we know that it's wrong and nobody can figure out how to make it wrong. And that is what keeps us stuck here. There's a marvelous demonstration. Around 2003 at a TED Talk of this guy showing a surface and he's got some sort of display and he does this and suddenly everything enlarges and then he does this and everything gets smaller. And this is the beginning of a multi-touch gesture called pinch to zoom that we all use. My claim is, is that we don't realize that pinch to zoom is probably built into the thing that we're confusing. For spacetime. So we don't know to do this. And when you do that, you change the distances, so you don't need to break the speed of light. So this is just, again, you're asking somebody who can't come in to the physics establishment, who is in the physics— I am in the physics establishment.

Julie Morgan — Wall Street Breakfast · Bullseye misses the mark · 2026-08-26I just want to say a few words to the graduates in the audience today. You sit here in a world that gets more international by the day. A world where there are trade barriers, sure, but there are no tariffs of the mind. I'm not even sure what that means, but let the man cook. I know you signed up for this totally free and fake university for the imaginary travel and fascinating stories, but we hope you learned a little something along the way. You now know what the flying geese are carrying. It's industrial knowledge. Knowledge and factory investment. You know your oil curse from your Dutch disease. They're the same thing. You can throw out the term multiple equilibria at dinner parties. It means multiple things that can reasonably happen. But these are just vocabulary words that will help you on your final exam. What we really hope you got from the season— well, what I got anyway— is the sense that there are lots of different ways to create prosperity and happiness. There are multiple equilibria, if you will. The principles of economics are the same from Oslo to McMurdo Station. We're all humans who make trade-offs every day, who follow incentives, but every country has a different way of using those principles to hopefully create the most good for the most number of people. We've had a few cautionary tales along the way, from the repressive government of North Korea to the currency misadventures of Argentina, but mostly we live in a world where people do get richer, where there is less poverty and more technological marvels. The secret to international economics is an open mind and the feeling that things can get better if we just learn the right lessons. I want to bring back our Antarctica professor for a moment. Natalie Stoeckl, any final words for the graduating class? They are worthy of the honor, I would say.
Robert Smith — Planet Money · The continent nobody owns & everyone benefits from (Summer School) · 2026-08-26Today, OpenAI announced its first custom interference chip named Jalapeño that it says serves the purposes better than NVIDIA's. They want to wean themselves off NVIDIA's pricey hardware. Be my guest. Maybe they can. Maybe they're big hat, no cattle. Google and Amazon have been, have been making competing chips of their own, but they've also been doing plenty of business with NVIDIA and speak incredibly highly of the product. Think of it this way, though. If you leave the comfortable world of NVIDIA, you leave the platform that most engineers want to write on, most young companies want to write on. Their chips aren't expensive. The chips— look, they're expensive, okay? They're expensive for a reason. And it's no coincidence that the companies I've mentioned are a huge part of the Nvidia story, hence why it dominates all option trading night after night after night. It's just too big not to. All that said, we can't discuss Nvidia's dominance without addressing the critics, because if the bears are right, the stock will tumble regardless of what reports tomorrow. Let me lay them out so you're ready. First and foremost, Nvidia has made a huge number of multibillion-dollar investments in AI, from Anthropic to OpenAI to Marvell Tech and Coherent and so many others, really too, too numerous to mention. Many of these investments have already yielded large profits, at least on paper. But NVIDIA sells almost nothing that's invested in there. Letting the— let's say the bets ride. I think these investments allow the companies involved to soar. NVIDIA gives them a chance to experiment, manufacture the wares better. Thanks to these moves, NVIDIA, this is— it's the sun. In what seems like an endless AI solar system. I think that's tremendous. Companies always want to dominate. Why shouldn't Nvidia use its profits to help ensure that it remains on top? It's not like they're doing anything anti-competitive. Nvidia invested $30 billion in OpenAI, and OpenAI is downright gleeful about inventing this new chip, Jalapeño, that can compete with Nvidia's. Word to the wise for OpenAI: I grow jalapeños. Don't touch them and put your hands to your eyes. It's a nightmare. Now, these investments come in many forms. Convertible preferred stock like Marvell, straight out common like Coherent, cash and warrants like Corning, backstops and guarantees for many others.
Jim Cramer — Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer 8/25/26 · 2026-08-25Okay. Where I'm going with this is this year is an absolutely incredible year for CapEx and technology and spending and investment. And it's like, it's almost— I don't want to say it's never been better, but in our lifetimes, it, it might not ever have been better than it is right now. But the stock market doesn't care about how good things are right now. They have already started to price in how good things would be today in January, in February. So that what the stock market is principally concerned with at this stage in the game is the coming winter and the coming spring. That is the— that is what pe— and that's why you have gigantic chip companies like Broadcom, for example, in deep drawdowns off of its high. You have Marvell in a drawdown. Both of those companies have just been reporting some of the greatest news and contracts and earnings any of us will ever see. But that was already priced in 6 months prior. Now those stocks are looking to the future, and people that don't understand this, they would intuitively look at the share price and conclude either the stock market is wrong or, um, or I don't understand what's happening. And neither of those has to be true. Stock market is— could be right, and you could perfectly understand what's happening. But it's the future that, that matters to the share price today, not today's current conditions. And I bring that up because there was a really shocking op-ed at Bloomberg by Bill Dudley. And Bill Dudley was the chairman of the New York Fed, I believe. Yeah. All right. So it's not often that you will get a former chairman of any of the Federal Reserve banks come out and literally call his shot, point to the, point to the bleachers like Babe Ruth and tell you, he tell you where the, where the ball's going. But he has an op-ed last week, basically 5 reasons the bubble will burst by the end of 2027. So he's not just saying it's a bubble, he's saying it's going to burst. And he's not just saying it's going to burst, he's telling you the time horizon. And I thought it was really interesting and the timing was interesting.
