Take a look at some Dow gainers. CAT's at the top today. Interesting, uh, pretty tight race for the best Dow name of the year between CAT, Cisco, and Merck, which is still still number one, completely reversed from yesterday.
Carl Quintanilla — Squawk on the Street · 9AM HOUR: Chips Rebound Ahead of Nvidia Earnings, Druckenmiller Slams Treasury, Dick's Sporting Goods Shares Plunge · 2026-08-25Well, I'll tell you, tell you right now, I wrote a piece this weekend for club members that I'm in the position— I'm positioning correctly for this moment. Now, you're not supposed to say that, but I am positioning correctly because I think what's happened is— take a look, let's use the drug stocks as a good example. So yes, Merck does go up because of Moderna. And from what I can tell, that is a real serious— I mean, my daughter had melanoma. I, like everybody else who had that, just immediately calls the oncologist and calls the dermatologist. And it was encouraging from both. What can I say?
Jim Cramer — Squawk on the Street · 9AM HOUR: Big Market Week: Bessent, Warsh and Earnings from Nvidia 8/24/26 · 2026-08-24It's great to watch Merck stock go up and Moderna, but even more so the idea that there could at least be the beginnings of true vaccines for certain types of cancers. And obviously it's a long way to go.
David Faber — Squawk on the Street · 9AM HOUR: Big Market Week: Bessent, Warsh and Earnings from Nvidia 8/24/26 · 2026-08-24Part 3: Where It Lands. Wednesday opened on a remarkable morning for biology. Anthropic reported that Claude designed working protein binders, and Merck and Moderna's personalized cancer vaccine posted Phase 3 interim results strong enough that the market added $50 billion in a day. This one is personal for our family. My son went through cancer treatment of his own. Here's the mechanism and the math.
Nathan Labenz — "The Cognitive Revolution" | AI Builders, Researchers, and Live Player Analysis · AI in the AM — Weekly Highlights: Relaunch Week (Aug 17–20, 2026) · 2026-08-22in his case, it was a B-cell cancer. And the immune system then takes out all functionally all of your B cells. So, you lose not just the cancerous B cells, but you also lose the healthy B cells. So, that creates additional side effects. It creates a longer recovery time, makes him more vulnerable. He might have to get revaccinated for stuff. So, this is advantaged in two ways, one being that the targets are identified specifically for you and they should be highly selective, and there's 30 targets. So, the ability to identify 30 different targets and program that all into a single vaccine, you know, gives you a lot in terms of redundancy. The, the stock pop on this was $50 billion between Moderna and Merck, roughly. And I was just thinking, boy, that does imply an awful lot of consumer surplus. I mean, my son's treatment was roughly speaking, over the course of 6 months, estimated at— you can never get to ground truth on this stuff, but I just asked ChatGPT to estimate what it would cost to do all this treatment, and the answer came back something like between half a million and a million and a quarter. And I suspect it was probably on the high side of that because we were in the hospital a lot. So that's the cost to treat cancer, a million dollars. That's when it goes well, right? And he hasn't had a recurrence, hasn't had to go back. Basically everything went according to plan. $50 billion divided by a million is $50,000. So if you could prevent 50,000 recurrences where all of a sudden somebody goes from seeming like they were okay to, oh shit, it came back. Now they've got a whole massive journey in front of them again that's going to cost a million dollars. To the system, obviously, you know, plus all their pain and suffering. Uh, if you can do that for 50,000 people, you can save the system $50 billion. And that's the amount of value that they seem to have captured on day one. So my son's one cancer type, you know, has like a couple thousand a year.
Speaker D — "The Cognitive Revolution" | AI Builders, Researchers, and Live Player Analysis · AI in the AM — Weekly Highlights: Relaunch Week (Aug 17–20, 2026) · 2026-08-22888-99-Chart, 888-992-4278, so I get through and ask your question. On today's show. Let's take a quick look at the market today, and really for the entire week. We had a little bit of a bounce back today with the S&P up 33 points, about a little less than a half a percent. But if you look at the week as a whole, it was still in negative territory, and really it was driven by the decline in a lot of the hardware names, AI-related names. NVIDIA was down 5.3%. for the week, Meta down 7.9%, Broadcom down 10.5%, Intel down about 14%, Dell down about 11%. So that was really what dragged the broader market down. Apple of the Mag 7 was really the strong performer, up 1% on the week. Google, Microsoft down as well. So overall, that was dragging down the market. Uh, you still have some strength out of healthcare. We had the big short covering rally over Moderna earlier in the week, but for the week, names like Merck were up 14%. Uh, on the retail side though, that was on the weaker side. Walmart down 10% for the week. So the retail sector certainly struggling a bit. Utilities were down as well because of higher interest rates, and those higher interest rates precipitated the Treasury buyback announcement that really catapulted Gold, GDX, up over 11% on the week. And the debasement trade is back. And this is a long-term trend. This is why I keep pounding the table that everybody— it's a new era. This isn't your '80s, this isn't your '90s. You have to look at the bigger picture, the broader cycle that we are in, which is— this is— go read The Fourth Turning. This is the time where chaos ensues. And then after, we rebuild something that's bigger and better, more sustainable, both from, I think, a financial situation as well as a political situation as well. So, uh, while seems crazy right now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. But in the meantime, you have to adjust your portfolios accordingly. That's why money keeps flowing into gold. This is for thousands of years, for millennia, going back God knows how long, gold has been the core.
Justin Klein — InvestTalk · Financial innovation is now a Fed problem · 2026-08-22Let's start with a couple of extremely important terms that go hand in hand: cyclical and secular. Now, you hear these all the time, yet no one but me ever bothers to explain what they mean, even though they're crucial when it comes to picking stocks. Cyclical has nothing to do with the spin cycle on your washing machine or Wagner's Ring Cycle. Somewhat my classical music. And secular isn't about the separation of church and state or public versus parochial schools. Oh, yes. And kudos to the late, great Lou Rukeyser, who first cracked that cyclical washing machine joke. And I've always remembered it's probably been about 50 years now. We say a company's cyclical if it needs a strong economy in order to grow. It's cyclical because it depends on the business cycle. Cyclical cycle. So metals and mining companies and oil and gas, really any kind of raw materials, plus most of the industrials are cyclical. The homebuilders are cyclical. The automakers are cyclical. The commodity chemical makers like Dow are cyclical. You want a bunch of copper and iron mines like BHP? That's the definition of cyclical. These companies are all hostage to the vicissitudes of the economy. When the economy heats up, they earn a lot more money and we're willing to pay more for those earnings. And when the economy slows down or shifts into a recession mode, they earn a lot less money and investors pay less for their shares. I always say the cyclicals are boom and bust. Names. Ah, secular growth company, on the other hand, is one where the earnings keep coming regardless of the economy's overall health. Think anything you eat, drink, brush your teeth with, or use as medication. So you've got consumer staples like Procter Gamble, of course, the food companies like General Mills, the drug stocks like Pfizer or Merck or Eli Lilly. These are the classic recession-proof names that you want to buy when the economy slows down. Investors flock to the companies that can generate Safe, consistent earnings unless the GLP-1 drugs actually really take over the world, because you don't stop eating food or brushing your teeth just because of recession. Okay, so why is this secular versus cyclical distinction so important? Why is it the first piece of Wall Street jargon I'm translating for you?
Jim Cramer — Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer · Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer 8/21/26 · 2026-08-21For the week, the Dow lost 0.8%, the Nasdaq subtracted 2%, S&P 500 down about 1.4%.
