Marathon Petroleum ($MPC) podcast mentions
Hello, InvestTalk. This is Yannick from Denmark. Refinery oil stocks, Marathon Petroleum, Valero Energy, and Phillips 66, I'm seeing them as continuously strong, even though there may be ups and downs in the Iran war. I'm just asking about those 3 stocks in general. Would you agree that they are still a very valid choice in this environment? Thank you very much. This is Yannick from Denmark. Bye.
Steve Peasley · InvestTalk · AI Data Centers Are Eating the Land Market: Real Estate's Next Big Disruption · 2026-09-16So EBITDA for Marathon Petroleum, which is the biggest and best refining product— I will say that that is a member of my Substack, Farley Associated Research. That is part of my Hormuz baskets. And so the other holdings is a shipping company, as well as a Canadian stock that produces 10% of Canadian sulfur, which I think is the most extreme shortage. Maybe diesel is actually more extreme than sulfur now. But all right, let's just look at EBITDA and share the screen again. This is for— whoops, wrong, sorry, wrong chart. This is Total, uh, actually I'll do EBITDA. Total, total EBITDA is total EBIT, no DA. No, no, this is DA, this is DA. Um, 8.4. Um, going back to 9.2 was the peak in June 2022, and you clearly saw a giant ramp up in EBITDA there.
Jack Farley · Monetary Matters with Jack Farley · Hawks Take Flight | Joseph Wang on Fed’s Hawkish Hike and Warsh’s Gameplan · 2026-09-16So I know, um, is it Is it okay if we disclose how, uh, that there's been another Monetary Matters member who's been long Marathon Petroleum?
Jack Farley · Monetary Matters with Jack Farley · Hawks Take Flight | Joseph Wang on Fed’s Hawkish Hike and Warsh’s Gameplan · 2026-09-16Yeah, yeah, you, you, so you own Marathon Petroleum, uh, and Valero.
Jack Farley · Monetary Matters with Jack Farley · Hawks Take Flight | Joseph Wang on Fed’s Hawkish Hike and Warsh’s Gameplan · 2026-09-16Yeah, I think that's fair to say. I just am not confident necessarily that the demand destruction basically that you're talking about— like, that's the implication I think of a lot of what you're saying, is that there is so many industries that rely on diesel that if eventually the price gets high enough, we will see demand destruction. Like we're not seeing it at this level. And so my point is, I'm not calling for $10 diesel. I'm not calling for, for the, for that bar that we saw, that massive bar in terms of the, the EBITDA of, uh, Marathon to spike up again. I'm just saying instead of seeing that spike up and then a rapid decline, it's going to be more— there's a potential for it to be more of a plateau. So this is by no means a call for $10 diesel or anything like that. It's just we're not quite seeing it at these levels yet despite the record high that we're seeing. And, uh, if we continue to stay in this range, they're going to continue to, to print.
Max Weethy · Monetary Matters with Jack Farley · Hawks Take Flight | Joseph Wang on Fed’s Hawkish Hike and Warsh’s Gameplan · 2026-09-16They are, they are absolutely printing, Max. And I'll say this, that Marathon Petroleum, MPC, I've looked at— they have a very good history of treating their shareholders well, of dividends and buybacks. And that is in stark contrast to the shipping world, which I think their earnings are honestly probably even more on fire than refining, if that's even possible. And, but they, you know, they are known, uh, their corporate governance structure is a little more loosey-goosey, specifically when it comes to the Hellenic Shipowners, um, some of whom basically have, you know, they run the, they run their same fleet. They have a private fleet and then they have a publicly traded fleet and they run that out of the same office. Which is not, you know, what you'd expect kind of from 21st century corporate governance, uh, MBA style. But Max, I just want to talk about, like, is— are the earnings too low? Are there— so I think, I think Marathon Petroleum EBITDA estimates, they seem a bit high to me. One company that estimates seem wildly too low is, is just, uh, Lam Research.
Jack Farley · Monetary Matters with Jack Farley · Hawks Take Flight | Joseph Wang on Fed’s Hawkish Hike and Warsh’s Gameplan · 2026-09-16yeah, I mean, so she's been hustling, you've been hustling, now you're married and she's going, wait, I thought marriage was going to be like fun and you're giving me like a running regimen for a marathon all of a sudden. So I think there needs to be some vision cast about, hey, where do you want to end up 5 years from now? Great, we both say we want to be debt-free with savings in the bank and own a home. Great, now it's just about what's the best path to get there that's surefire. And we know that's the Ramsey plan. So it might take, you know, walking her through Financial Peace University. Hey, Friday nights we're going to watch a new lesson and we're going to talk about it. We're going to do our budget and check in and also dream.
George Kamel · The Ramsey Show · Wisdom Starts Where Debt Ends · 2026-09-16Well, and Josh, this will be a good one for you to jump in on here once I get my showbiz out of the way and into the biz biz, is that people would say, oh, what do you love about your show? And I mean, obviously I love the people I work with, but 40, and I love doing it for the audience, but 49% of what I loved was the process. Could we get the process right? 'Cause it's no good if you can do a good show, but it absolutely kills you and everybody on the staff, 'cause you gotta do another one tomorrow. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You had to remember that. And basically, the longevity of your work, the sustainability of your work is based upon how well you communicate what today's intention is to everybody and what everyone's role is clearly. People only do what you ask of them. But if you lead with some sense of vision of whatever you're supposed to do today, Well, then that makes, that makes the possibility of the actual content gets better.
Stephen Colbert · TBPN · High Interest Rate Phenomenon, Driscoll's China Bet Backfires, Who Votes on AI Safety? | Stephen Colbert & Josh Kline, Jim VandeHei, Steve Menneto, Matthew Wilson, Rune Kvist, Tyler Bahl, James Cadwallader · 2026-09-15And they're like, the marathoners are like these incredible, like they have this like intense focus that can just go and go and go. I thought it's really interesting, like we entrain ourselves to these rhythms, not just circadian rhythms, but distraction. I thought that's pretty cool. And so then I looked at it differently and I thought, okay, every time I feel the pain of trying to write this paragraph and I want to do something and it's like, it's not happening. I'm like, great, that's the friction, that's the plasticity. Reading the audiobook, I mean, I don't want to scare anyone away, but it's 19-hour audiobook post-edits. Oh boy. Brutal, right? How long did it take you? It took me about 60 hours total to record it. And you know, you're trying to get the enunciation right and the intonation. You got to keep the energy right. I mean, you do this for a living on stage, but anyway, if nothing else, the book will cure insomnia. So, you know, the goal is not to have people read it or listen to it straight all the way through it. So it can be a reference and a lookup guide so they can get the information they want and move on with life. I think people are sort of geared toward options. Overoptimization over the last year. Like, people need to, like, chill. Like, you don't have to do everything all the time. But the point is that your brain learns these skills. And so I suppose if I have any real fear with AI, it's not as big as the ones that you cited. It's that people will just become increasingly lazy about using their mind to think. You know, I just believe in friction, just as you point out. Do hard things. That's also mentally hard things. I think it's good. I think hard Learning to grind through a bit more of that friction point, I think, is a big part of being a healthy human. And the data tell us it's also what leads to brain longevity. So, you look at old people, their mouth, who are losing their cognition, I noticed they all mouth breathe, no data on that, but they're all mouth breathing and they can't focus on anything for very long. They don't have any friction in their lives.
Andrew Huberman · The Joe Rogan Experience · #2553 - Andrew Huberman · 2026-09-14I mean, I'm not a long-distance runner myself, but I've cheered at marathons. And I've often noticed, Emma, that you might cheer for the people who are doing really well and the top runners who are blazing past. But very often, it's the stragglers, the people who are struggling at mile 16 or mile 20, and they're not sure if they can make it, and you're not sure if they can make it. That's where the crowd comes alive and really tries to egg the person on. And very much, it's a case of trying to encourage the person to, to get across the finish line.
Shankar Vedantam · Hidden Brain · Why Conversations Go Wrong · 2026-09-14Oh yeah, yeah. I don't think anybody needs to own their manufacturing facilities. I think what's most important is owning your formulations. There's two things: ownership which comes from creation. And so that's why we invest in cosmetic chemists. I mean, the cosmetic chemists that we have on staff, Guy, they could run a marathon while I'm still trying to run a 5K. I mean, I'm the worst product developer in this building. And I think I'm pretty good. I made liquid lash extensions, you know? And so I think, you know, it's about investing there. And then it's also about negotiating exclusivity. Because those two things protect the formulations and the integrity of that. And even so, you know, don't do it on a handshake. You need a contract, and then you need to reinforce that contract a lot because as the products, you know, start to take off, that is gonna invite in competition. And I love competition because I think it keeps us sharp. And I stay really focused on what does our customer want from us? Knowing that there are probably thousands of brands that are, that are out there being, you know, constantly developing new products. But, but I think that that is one of the most important things is to really, really own your formulations so that you can say with integrity that you can't get this anywhere else.

Jason Calacanis · All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · AI Kills Everybody or Doomer Psyop? OpenAI's Math Breakthrough, Nike's $200B Collapse · 2026-09-11I think the screenless fitness tracker is a slightly more health-focused, slightly more athletic type of like buyer versus the Apple Watch is, it's the most popular watch in the world. It's the definition of like the baseline casual. I'm going to maybe get into this a little bit. So if they could offer something for the people who are like, I want more than the Apple Watch will give me, and I don't want the screen on my wrist and I wanna run an ultra marathon and the Ultra Watch is not what I want. It's just a possible new thing to sell.
Marques · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · Did Apple Actually Duo It? · 2026-09-11I'm not too worried. But okay, Ultra 4, same $800 price. It has a larger battery now. They say over 2 days of battery life, which I think is a big deal for them and specifically aimed at Garmin and a couple of these other companies. They now have a max extended workout mode, which gives you 45 hours of battery life, which they said is enough for ultra marathon.
