We're going to say, oh yeah, we've seen this I've had too many failures of all of these systems to trust it, to allow it to do anything on its own. Whatever, if I need to put stuff on the grocery list, I'm gonna go in and do that myself. I'm gonna add it to my grocery list. If I wanna order a car, I will do that. I will pick up my phone, open up Uber or Lyft or Waymo or Zoox, depending on where I am, order a car ride. You know, I'm not going to rely on any of these, any of these assistants to do that because too often they get it wrong. You know, they misinterpret where I want to go or what it is I want, and it's just not worth the hassle.
Sam Abuelsamad — This Week in Tech (Audio) · Usain Volt - Meta, Addiction, & the Future of Online Engagement · 2026-08-24Uh, he is of course the host of the Wheel Bearings podcast. We're glad you're both here. We're glad you're here, especially our club members who make all of this possible. Thank you. Our show this week brought to you by, oh, another new sponsor, BILT. B-I-L-T. Here's a question. Are you getting rewarded for paying your rent or your mortgage right now? We were just talking about finance, right? Are you— you're not getting rewarded for paying your rent or your mortgage. If the answer is no, well, you should check out Bilt. Becoming a Bilt member means earning points on every housing payment, no matter where you live. Bilt points can be redeemed for flights, hotels, Lyft rides, Amazon.com purchases, future housing payments, and more. An unexpected benefit, Bilt gives every member access to its Agentic neighborhood concierge. It's right in the Bilt app. It doesn't just give you information about your home, home and neighborhood. It executes. It's connected to your home and over 50,000— 50,000 merchant partners. So you can actually tell Bilt, pay my rent, make a dinner reservation, book a fitness class, schedule a Lyft, and more. It makes things happen while automatically applying your member benefits along the way. And for a crowd that thinks a lot about what agentic AI actually looks like in practice, this is an example worth paying attention to. First, download the Bilt B-I-L-T. You'll find it right there on the App Store. Second, link to any credit or debit card. Any credit or debit card, you link it in the app so you don't even need to get a new card. It'll tell you about exclusive member benefits at restaurants, fitness studios, on your Lyft rides, and more around your home. And if you're a homeowner, Bilt works not just for rent but for mortgages too. Your housing payment— isn't that one of your biggest monthly expenses? Why wouldn't you want to earn points? Leo Laporte — This Week in Tech (Audio) · Usain Volt - Meta, Addiction, & the Future of Online Engagement · 2026-08-24And then there's some people token maxing. But I believe people now are watching the meter. People have started watching the meter. So this is exactly what I saw up close and personal with Uber. In the price wars between Lyft and Uber, and then there were other competitors like Sidecar, and then DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates. They were talking about this incredible growth. They were moving to every city. But then we knew internally, hey, across these companies, we're losing $5 a ride.
Jason Calacanis — This Week in Startups · Open source is going to win it all: Harvey proves it | E2328 · 2026-08-21But then Lyft was giving $600 and then the drivers are smart. They're like, oh, you guys are idiots. I'm going to— next week I'm doing Lyft. The week after I'm doing Uber. I hit my incentive. I flip to the next person. Okay. Yeah. YOLO. I'll DoorDash.
Jason Calacanis — This Week in Startups · Open source is going to win it all: Harvey proves it | E2328 · 2026-08-21Yeah, so, you know, it was pretty much like the continue to execute on the WhatsApp strategy, funny enough. But, you know, we, I think these local ecosystems had a wave, a first wave of entrepreneurs that got to some sort of scale that was meaningful, let's say within the $1 billion to $5 billion range usually, and, but they didn't get to see the all the way through, right? So there were things because it was the first time around, because the ecosystem itself was really, really hard. There was a lot of lessons that they had that they couldn't see and fulfill their vision that gets them going and thinking about, okay, I'm gonna do a next business, but this time around I'm gonna apply all the knowledge that I I have all the network that I build and go build something even bigger because I know I can, right? So that has been the way that we identify these people because of their drive to be like, okay, this $5 billion exit or $5 billion outcome wasn't enough for me. I want to do something greater from my local ecosystem. And the way that we build these relationships is we track them very, very We help them to come to events. What these people usually want is they want to reactivate their network at times, right? They, especially in AI, they want to get connected with the smartest engineers at Stanford, right? Like they want to be in the flow of talent and we give them that bridge to them, right? So like we map out these people, we put them in touch and we kind of help them ideate about their ideas as well. And that came along where like we introduced them to customers so that they can have this advanced conversation and kind of validate what they're thinking through. And then we're very intentional as well when it comes to putting it all together for them, right? So like the, in the case, I'll give an example. We invested in Frederic Guillaume. He has a new company. When they were, the company name is Pit.com. So when they were coming to Silicon Valley, we put them in touch with the top execs from DoorDash, the top execs from Lyft, the top execs from a bunch of our portfolio companies.

Support for the show comes from Built. There's a whole system in your brain nicknamed the reward system. So why not take a page out of your brain's book and create a reward system for your housing payments? That's exactly what Built did. You can redeem Built points for flights, hotels, Lyft rides, amazon.com purchases, future housing payments, and more. Bilt also gives every member access to its Agentic Neighborhood Concierge in the Bilt app. It's basically an assistant that's connected to both your home and over 50,000 merchant partners. So you can ask it to pay for your rent, make a dinner reservation, book a fitness class, schedule a Lyft, and more. It can help you out while automatically applying your member benefits along the way. Benefits aside, if you've been curious about what Agentic AI actually looks like in practice, this is an example of just that. It's not just for renters. BILT works for mortgages as well. Scott Galloway — The Prof G Pod with Scott Galloway · Is SpaceX Overvalued? + What to Do When You're Not Getting Promoted · 2026-08-17So Travis, why didn't you buy Lyft? And do you regret it? What would you do if you can go back in time?
Eric Newcomer — The a16z Show · Ben Horowitz and Travis Kalanick on Building Again · 2026-08-14I think this will surprise a lot of people, but Lyft's culture was very different than ours. Maybe it started with the pink mustache, but I think it's interesting, right? When it comes to entrepreneurs that are in that moment where you could acquire something, by the way, I got a lot of shit for this for a long time. So yeah, the, the culture didn't, yeah, the, yeah, yeah, the culture didn't mix. And when you meet with somebody and you're gonna acquire them and there's so much goodness that could come from it, by the way, we're in some crazy war, probably spending a billion dollars a year on it or some insane amount of money. You want it to work.
