We're gonna take a little road trip through the Southwest today with pit stops in New Mexico and Arizona. But first, let's fill the tank with some data, shall we? From American Public Media, this is Marketplace. In Denver, I'm Amy Scott. In for Kai Ryssdal, it's Wednesday, August 26th. Good to have you with us. Inflation, as measured by the PCE, or Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, is still too dang high. That's the latest from the Commerce Department. Well, not in so many words, but the headline is that prices were 3.7% higher in July from the year before. As you hear us say all the time, the PCE is the one the Fed is really paying attention to, and it's been well above the central bank's 2% target for more than 5 years now. Marketplace's Nancy Marshall-Genzer takes a look at why the inflation we're seeing now is proving so hard to contain.
Amy Scott — Marketplace · How much power does the Fed really have? · 2026-08-26Yeah, so, you know, I'll kind of bring it back. So as everyone knows, we did a hostile takeover attempt on Pacific Booker. It's about 7 kilometers south, southwest of our property. We got onto this whole thing because 2 years ago, 2 and a half years ago, we saw that they were letting go of a lot of their land package, which we thought was really bizarre. To hold that land would cost about $250,000. And you essentially can't take it back. So once it goes out in there into the ether, anyone can pick it up. So before they dropped it, we contacted them and said, are you guys serious about this company? Like, why are you letting go of this land? We're trying to structure some sort of deal, whether it buy the land from them, buy the company, whatnot. And their preference was just to let the land go. And we always kind of had our eyes on Pacific Booker, but right now how it is, it's right next to a lake. It's really tough to permit. And it's 250 million tonnes. I mentioned before, in order to build a mine for these big miners, you got to be at least twice the size of that. But we know that big ore bodies hang out with big ore bodies, and we thought that other land was really prospective. Noranda thought it was prospective. It just never got drilled. So we were really upset when they dropped that because it just makes our job a lot harder. But luckily, Eagle Plains was the one that took on most of the land, and they have a different business model than us. They're project generators. They option it off and hoping that someone else can spend the money to make a discovery. They hold a small portion of it. And we really liked it. And we didn't buy it because we wanted a position next to Booker. We bought it because we thought it was prospective land that has a really good chance to make a discovery. And of all the land we see in the Babine region, we liked that land the most. So we did the deal with EPL, give them a head— they're a great company. They've made a lot of discoveries. They use an arm called Terralogic.
Anthony Moreau — Mining Stock Daily · American Eagle: The NAK Story Just Got Bigger · 2026-08-26And the Trump administration has done a lot to remove the impediments that, you know, I think were in place during the Biden administration. You know, famously, in the early days of the Biden administration, we saw the removal of the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline and effectively killing that project. But, you know, removing the impediments, the approval, streamlining the approval process through the various bodies that are responsible for the permitting of new pipeline construction and buildout, that can, that can allow for a fast track of project expansion. And we're seeing a number of big projects being developed in areas like Texas and Ultimately, we'll see some pipelines deliver refined products to the Southwest and ultimately the West Coast of California. But it is, it is a process that's lengthy, that's lengthy. And the Trump administration is doing a lot to expedite that process.
Ben Cook — Bloomberg Surveillance · Reacting to PCE and Market Look Ahead · 2026-08-26And there are many trade-offs both products are making for that sort of respective specialization. So one, you've kind of got this domain-level specialization that's already occurring. And then two, as I mentioned earlier, you've got this sort of— I think of it as the Big Five sort of personality traits. If folks have studied that, you know, you can't be both highly open and highly neurotic. And, you know, sometimes when you have an intelligence you're applying to an accounting problem, you want neuroticism. When you're applying it to a design problem, you want openness. So you actually have a need for both types of minds in the organization, which is why you would select something like a GLM-53 versus a KIMI-K3. So Definitely not commodities in our view. This is an important point. You know, there are many product categories in which model aggregation delivers a greater-than-sum-of-parts outcome. And, you know, a good metaphor for this is Expedia. You know, it's so much more useful to use Expedia than it is to go to United, than to go to Delta, than to go to Southwest. You just want a single place where you can benefit from seeing every airline's inventory. Similarly, you know, in coding, we're actually seeing this with Cursor a ton where you want to do a very frontier model for planning, for example, but then you can use a lesser model for execution and you really need to have one product harness or sort of product architecture that lets you use multiple models. Creative tools is another great example where you've got, you know, models that specialize in different modalities. So you've got something like an ElevenLabs, which of course is incredible at voice music as well. And then you've got something like Black Forest, which is doing such an excellent job in kind of video and creative direction. and the correct product is to bring all of these together into one shell. And then finally, research and decisions. We see this all the time where, you know, the models are trained with sort of non-overlapping datasets often. So you're able to just get more information by running the same query through many models adversarially and then having a separate model sort of help you converge.
Anish Acharya — The a16z Show · The State of AI: Macro, Apps, and Consumer · 2026-08-26Two, I think we're very advanced in our understanding or much more advanced in our understanding of the extensions to Kibang in the north-northeast direction. Towards Diamond Saddle and in the south-southwest direction heading towards Danmargle and probably sort of south, southeast of Danmargle, I should say.
Tim Crossley — Mining Stock Daily · Adyton Resources' Tim Crossley on Feni project: Lihir similarities and updated MRE due in '27 · 2026-08-25Looking beyond the next 2 years, as you said, a lot depends on conditions, meteorological conditions and use and how much we're able to conserve. But Are you confident that the Southwest can continue to grow with such a threatened source of water?
Amy Scott — Marketplace · Preparing for an AI tax crisis · 2026-08-25This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare Podcast. Scott Becker — Becker’s Healthcare Podcast · Kevin Cook, MSBA, President of the Greater Silicon Valley Market at Sutter Health · 2026-08-22Thank you. And you've had this fascinating leadership career, obviously Obigaini by background, um, and then in leadership at Northwell, at Corewell, and now here. Amy Perry is obviously a remarkable leader, as was Dr. Fine, Peter Fine, tremendous leadership out at Banner. What brought you out to the Southwest? I mean, you were in, I think, Michigan before then and the East Coast before that. What brought you out there? And I take it it wasn't golf and tennis, it was more actually leadership. But tell us about what, what made you make the decision to go out to Banner Health and take on a big role?
