Kaiser Aluminum ($KALU) podcast mentions
Well, certainly I grew up as a general surgeon and progressed through a variety of different leadership roles, both within Kaiser Permanente and then started outside of Kaiser Permanente at Sentara Healthcare in Southeastern Virginia, and then Blue Shield of California. Took a little bit of time off with an AI startup and been here for the last 3 years at Geisinger.

I, I'm thrilled today to be joined by a remarkable leader in healthcare. We're joined today by Liz Popwell. Liz has had a great leadership career. She's currently the System Vice President, Strategy and International at CommonSpirit Health. CommonSpirit Health is now the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in the United States, other than Kaiser, which is really a mix of insurance and health systems, but CommonSpirit's the largest and incredible health system. Liz, can you take a moment and tell us about yourself and your career?
Scott Becker · Becker’s Healthcare Podcast · Liz Popwell on Health System Strategy and Patient-Centered Care · 2026-09-10Yesterday, 4 o'clock, sitting on the beach, Jon, toes in the sand, enjoying the Labor Day, thinking, is it too early for my first adult beverage of the day? When I check my work email, which I do all the time because I was trained as an investment banker, we work 24/7, as opposed to some people who like to think when they leave the office they don't have to look at their emails. I do all the time. What hits my email at 4 o'clock is an email from Stuart Kaiser at Citigroup. He said, wow, US equity trading strategy. I read it and it was concise, but as his notes are, and I walked away thinking, all right, I'm a little bit smarter here. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go. And Stuart Kaiser in studio. We appreciate it. Stuart, how are you setting up your clients? What are you hearing from your trading clients as they think about this last third of the year here? There's a lot of crosswinds out there, not the least of which is elections, I guess.
Paul Sweeney · Bloomberg Surveillance · Geopolitical Risks and Market Uncertainty · 2026-09-08Stuart Kaiser, thanks so much. Appreciate it. Stuart Kaiser, read his research, folks. It's very direct, succinct, to the point, tells you where the markets are and what he's hearing from clients. And it's very helpful if you're trying to get a sense of what's going on out there in the markets. Stay with us. More from Bloomberg Surveillance coming up. After this.
Paul Sweeney · Bloomberg Surveillance · Geopolitical Risks and Market Uncertainty · 2026-09-08AI is becoming more powerful, but the resources needed to build it are increasingly concentrated. Does it have to stay that way? MTS host Sophia Du heads to the Open Source AI Summit in San Francisco to ask researchers and founders across the AI stack whether open source can create a more distributed future for AI. Lukas Kaiser, co-author of the landmark "Attention Is All You Need" paper, argues that today's concentration may be a property of our current technology, not an inevitable feature of AI. Transformers thrive on enormous amounts of data and compute, but they're less than a decade old, and the next breakthrough could change those economics. From open models and access to compute to companies owning their own intelligence, Sophia explores where AI power is actually concentrating, what openness can change, and what it still leaves unsolved.
Speaker A · The a16z Show · Can Open Source Keep AI Power From Concentrating? · 2026-09-07Joining me is Lukas Kaiser, an AI researcher and the co-author of Attention Is All You Need, the paper that introduced the transformer that completely changed modern-day AI. Where is modern-day AI and where is power currently concentrating?
Sophia Du · The a16z Show · Can Open Source Keep AI Power From Concentrating? · 2026-09-07But what it— it's significant because it's showing that even the big players are, they're reorienting around what they know best. They're pruning away those smaller books of business that is not their core operations, even if it's in theory one of the more or in the past is one of the more revenue-generating areas. Now, you know, this company like Centene, publicly traded, is saying we're going to focus entirely on Medicaid, Medicare, and ACA. Um, we're not making any business— enough money essentially to stay open, um, in, in this area. And I don't think it's that surprising. California, probably if not the mo— if not one of them, the most competitive health insurance market in the country between Kaiser Blue Shield of California, Anthem, United, all having huge books of business there. And then I also think it's just interesting to them pulling out of Oregon. Oregon is, I would argue, going into next year, seeing one of the biggest health insurance shakeups of all the states because you've got Providence Health Plan completely shutting down. You've got Legacy Health, which is in Portland, their health plan, PacificSource, pulling out of the ACA market. And now you've got Centene pulling out of the employer market. So Oregon keeps losing all these health insurance carriers. And that's going to cause, you know, it's just going to cause a lot of disruption. Option as we go into next year.
