Intel ($INTC) podcast mentions

  1. Not as bad as the ex-Anthropic researchers, who said humanity faces a death sentence 4 years from now. But still pretty bad. The solution in his eyes, a slowdown in AI development, lots of intervention to do things safely because we need to ensure that this kind of intrusion won't happen. Slacking the pace, basically. Now, I got two hats on this one. First is my stock picking hat where I want to help you try to make some money. From that perspective, I worry about how an AI spending slowdown could hurt all sorts of companies like NVIDIA, Intel, Micron, among many others. Those are ones that the clubrooms. Call me more nutritious, but I have a job to do— help you save money. Second, though, there's my human being hat. Not my top priority right here. But when these companies are talking about an existential threat to the human race, it's something I can't ignore. Now that I've studied this issue, that's what a lot of times I've spent out here. I believe that some regulation and guardrails are necessary here. But if these entities feel like they have to slow down spending, hey, they don't need to wait for the government. Stop the slowdown. Just Hey, spend less.

  2. They're, um, I think we're sharing now. So yeah, they most recently just reported a bombshell quarter and they guided to I think $8.2 billion for the quarter that is basically happening now, and they're going to report. But the growth that they're forecasting after that is so anemic. And I really think that you're going to have a huge step up in demand because the companies that are buying these machines are, yes, like semiconductors, you know, logic fabs like TSMC and Intel, but also a huge percentage of them, like 30 to 40%, and probably going up, is memory. So SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron. And that, you know, that's the biggest bull market in, in, in history is just memory producers. So they're, they're clearly going to do everything they can to increase capacity, and the, their machines are going to go up a lot. So I, I have a low conviction view that MPC estimates are too high, but I have a high conviction view that Lam Research estimates are, are too low.

  3. Lumentum, that's an optical communications manufacturer that makes a critical AI hardware component— component, rather. Lumentum Holdings surged 9.6% on the day. Chipmakers did all right too. Intel added 4%. Bonds, as long as we're here, sure. Prices fell, yield on the 10-year T-note 5.02%. You're listening to Marketplace.

  4. Mortgage rates in the U.S. climbed to their highest level in more than a year, the latest setback for a sluggish housing market. The Mortgage Bankers Association releasing figures that show the contract rate on a 30-year mortgage rose 12 basis points to 6.97% the week ending September 11th. That is the highest since May of 2025. SK Hynix says it is exploring its global options after Reuters reported the South Korean chipmaker is in talks with Intel to team up on manufacturing in the U.S. Bloomberg's Jon Tucker: SK Hynix could potentially lease part of Intel's chipmaking facility in Ohio that's been planned for a long time, or it could form a venture with Intel and major cloud firms. Bloomberg's Jon Tucker reports SK Hynix is not denying the Reuters report. It says it has not made a decision about an Intel deal. Intel shares about 5% higher.

  5. Well, it depends on the capital you have. I mean, we— as I've spoken on the show many times, you know, half of our capital comes from regulated balance sheets. And on those regulated balance balance sheets, our objective is to make plus or minus 7% depending on the rate environment. And so when you see the short end right now in 3 and 5 years where they are in their yields right now, I'm focusing— we are focused on high-quality spread in that short duration. So you don't have to take that equity risk. There's, there's no doubt that what we bring in, you know, you had the quote up on as the show started. The message that we've been saying is these— the scale of this CapEx cycle is unprecedented. It's going to take any and all precincts— equity, public equity, private equity, private capital, investment-grade debt, and everything else in between. And so for us, you know, for our regulated balance sheets, we're really a debt financing provider. And hence the Intel financing, the Broadcom financing, the NVIDIA financing.

  6. And then they have, you know, so energy is a big deal. And then they're partners with Tesla, with SpaceX in a new facility that's going to make— it's a 100 million square foot facility. The Pentagon, I think, is 5 million square feet. This is 100 million square feet. And Intel is a partner. It's really interesting that the head of Intel, who I guess President Trump thought was a really important person to turn around that company.

  7. Chinese officials are also considering BYD as a possible business delegation to join Xi Jinping's summit with Trump in Washington. Including BYD in the delegation could be provocative because of the U.S. imposing 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and BYD being blacklisted by the Pentagon. 8. Bloomberg's Jon Tucker says the Reuters report has SK Hynix discussing a potential lease on part of Intel's long-awaited plant in Ohio or forming a venture with Intel and major cloud firms. Intel shares about 5% higher. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has offered to make Canada an associate member of the EU, which would draw Canada deeper into Europe's markets and strategic industries. The idea of an associate membership is a partnership that falls short of a full membership but still offers some benefits. The proposal could have significant implications for Canada and would require approval from EU member states. It could also be complicated by issues like trade relationships with the U.S. That's news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Amy Morris, and this is Bloomberg.

  9. SK Hynix reportedly in talks with Intel to manufacture memory chips in the US for the first time. Get some details on that story when we come right back. Welcome back to Squawk on the Street. Our next guest out with a bold call saying that the same AI leaders who are now calling for a slowdown ultimately picked, quote, a dead-end technology that cannot do what they wanted to do. Let's bring in Elevation Partners co-founder Roger McNamee, of course, an early investor in Facebook and Google, as well as a former advisor to Mark Zuckerberg. Roger, it's great to have you. It does sound like you think these guys are up against the wall on open source competition and they are pulling any lever they can, they can pull.

  10. Yeah, certainly some of the comments, at least on the wires out of Thune today, suggest maybe this could be reconstructed or revisited. Really interesting, Garrett. Certainly Bitcoin has suffered a bit because of it. Appreciate that, Garrett Downs. Still ahead, SK Hynix and Intel jumping today on reports that they're in talks to maybe manufacture some memory chips in the US for the first time. We'll get you details after a short break. Got some action in the chips today. SK Hynix reportedly in talks with Intel to manufacture memory chips in the US for the first time. Christina Partsinévelos watching that story this morning. Hey, KP.

  11. All the The fab at the center of this is one Intel started building in Ohio years ago. Still hasn't finished. Two options, though, are on the table. SK Hynix could simply lease part of that particular plant, or maybe the more ambitious path, a joint venture with Intel and cloud giants building out AI data centers that are essentially starved for memory right now. And by helping fund the plant, they would lock in their own supply. SK Hynix isn't denying any of this. The company says only that it's exploring options with nothing final. They even told me this when they had their US listing here at the Nasdaq. So I actually believe all of these headlines. Politics and demand. Korea is on the hook for roughly a $350 billion investment pledge in the United States, the price of keeping its tariffs down. And Washington really keeps pushing to see more of it built on American soil. SK Hynix risks being singled out if it stays on the sidelines and doesn't actually commit. To building on US soil. And of course, demand— we know this, Carl— is white hot.

  12. Intel's own CEO just yesterday at a conference said that memory prices have jumped 5 to 7 times and suppliers don't see relief until 2028. That's the pressure pushing cloud companies to back a plant of their own. For Intel, this helps maybe fix an expensive mistake. The company spent billions starting— maybe I shouldn't say mistake, just an expensive endeavor. The company spent billions starting the Ohio plant, then stalled construction because it didn't have enough customers to fill it. They changed CEOs. SK Hynix could be that customer paying to use space Intel already planned to build. Investors definitely like the idea. That's why shares are up 5%. And there's already a relationship between the two firms. Intel sold its own memory business to SK Hynix back in 2020, and now it may actually rent the floor from them. The hard part is high-bandwidth memory, the high-end memory behind the AI trade. South Korea guards it as a national core technology, and making it abroad means a government review. And with that fab not set to open until 2030, 2031, a signed deal could still be years from its first chip.

  13. I was going to ask you about the geopolitical issues here and and what led to a potential deal. You know, Intel now considered more of a national champion, SK Hynix for Korea. And just I don't know how it relates to some of the geopolitical and trade conversations.

  14. Good Wednesday morning. Welcome to Squawk on the Street. I'm Sarah Ison with Carl Quintanilla and David Faber. We are live, as always, from Post 9 of the New York Stock Exchange. It is Fed decision day. Wall Street is pricing in the first rate hike since July 2023 as surging energy prices and rising bond yields complicate the macro picture. Former Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart will join us with his expectations there. Plus, the AI pacing debate heating up as Dario Amodei doubles down at Dreamforce. We'll discuss with Undersecretary Secretary of Defense Emil Michael, who helped lead the Pentagon's blacklisting of Anthropic, remember, earlier this year. And we'll talk about what's driving this early pop for Intel shares as well, up more than 4%.
