So the charts that you see of how much oil is getting through is definitely too low. But Jeff Currie, a commodity analyst, former Goldman, former Carlyle, he's made the point that oil getting through is not as explosive as the refined products. Those are really explosive. So as a result, even though the price of oil had gone down a bit, the refined products were always super high, and that's why the crack spread was so high. And then what's been going on in the past month is the price of oil has returned high, so the WTI is now above $100. So the commodity complex, Max, has really snuck up on us. And really, it's amazing the stock market isn't down more. I'll just say that. I mean, I know that You know, every, everyone, uh, was dooming and saying the price of oil is going to ruin the economy in like April and May, and that didn't happen. But I think as a result, people got complacent, myself included.

Banks again knocked about off the back of this decision. They've had some difficult guidance from the likes of Bank of America more recently, too. But I just noticed Goldman on the Bloomberg dropping some 4 or 5 percentage points this afternoon. Bramo, going into the close of the next 45 minutes or so. Banks have held up really well for the year so far. In fact, they've traded really well because nominal GDP is so strong off the back of that hawkish Fed speak. Just start to see those banks slide in response to that move in the yield curve.
Jonathan Ferro · Bloomberg Surveillance · Instant Reaction: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on Fed Policy · 2026-09-16First though, let's do the numbers. Well, here you go. Kevin War started talking, stock started falling. Dow Industrials down 631 points today, 1.2% finished at 51,400. 4.61. NASDAQ basically flat, 25,978. S&P 500 gave back about 33 points, 0.4%. 7,551. Heard a lot about the Fed's rate hike today. Higher interest rates, of course, weigh on banks by curbing loan demand and doing a whole bunch of other stuff. Goldman Sachs fell 4% today. Wells Fargo sank 3%. Citigroup weakened 2.4%. JP Morgan Chase slid 1%. Kelly Wells was talking about mortgage applications. Rocket Companies, one of the biggest mortgage lenders in this economy, felt the sting today, dropped 1.8%. One of the biggest homebuilders also took a hit. D.R. Horton contracted 1.3%. Amazingly, tech was a bright spot.

Instant Reaction · Bloomberg Intelligence · Instant Reaction: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on Fed Policy · 2026-09-16And yes, it's lasting longer than anyone expected, 7 months. But there's a debate about whether that's really filtering through into inflation beyond things where you would expect, like gas stations, diesel prices, transport transportation prices, airline fares, all of that, you know, directly from oil. And what can the Fed really do about that? Goldman Sachs, they came out this week and they said, OK, we think they're going to hike, but they made the case for a no hike. We think that all of the overshoot of 2% on inflation is due to one-time factors whose impact is fading, that the improvement in core PCE inflation to a 2.5% pace over the last 3 months is an early sign of this, that high inflation looks is broad-based mainly because of tariff effects, that inflation expectations are not an immediate risk of unanchoring, and that the economy is not overheated, which is the reason to hike. I mean, traditionally Fed hikes when economies overheat and produce a lot of inflation. We also heard this argument from Stephen Myron, who stepped off the Fed recently as a governor.
Sarah Eisen · Squawk on the Street · 10AM Hour: DoD’s Emil Michael on AI Fears, Fed Decision on Deck, C-Suite Warns about Fuel Prices 9/16/26 · 2026-09-16I would argue more evidence. So, so the Goldman Sachs argument that you just articulated about perhaps we're on our way back to a normal range of inflation, I think buys you another couple of months. Further evidence that you talk— we saw Walmart say we got all these tariff refunds, we're going to pass that through to price. They're the most articulate of the companies to have said something like that, but others have alluded to it. So tariff-led price increases might fall by the wayside at some point, God willing. We have a cessation to hostilities and oil won't be $108, gasoline won't be— or diesel, I should say, won't be $6. So there are some things in the pipeline that you would hope would come to fruition. And I think a few more months when you have missed your target for 5 years isn't too much to ask for when you have a confluence of events working.

That's the only difference, Jim. On Meta, I would add Citi today goes a 90-day upside catalyst. This is a really interesting level, Jim. It's tried 3 times now to hold above 680. And I know the Goldman desk yesterday said maybe Muse is the product that can help, help get past that.

Stephen, you have called for a lower regime environment. I'm going to go to Jan Hatzius at Goldman Sachs, who makes clear, yeah, you may get rate increase, but we're not going to get 3, 4, 5 rate increases and that this is a not idiosyncratic, idiosyncratic, but one-off move to a higher rate regime. The shocks will recede. And we'll get back to Stephen Major. Lower rates. Discuss that.

The Federal Open Market Committee is widely expected to raise its benchmark rate by a quarter percent. Goldman Sachs believes the FOMC will proceed with the hike primarily to avoid the negative market reaction that would likely follow if rates were kept on hold. However, Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies and senior fellow at American Enterprise Institute, said he does not believe a majority of the FOMC has materially changed its assessment since July. Leading him to expect the central bank to leave rates unchanged. We don't have to wait too much longer to find out which way they'll go. The Fed will make the rate announcement at 2 PM today, and the chairman will hold a press conference at 2:30.

Ed Zitron · Prof G Markets · AI Insiders Keep Saying We’re In Danger — Where’s The Evidence? · 2026-09-16By the way, I decided to leave after a year as I just couldn't handle working for a large organization. I just, I just, I'm just not cut out for it. Not because I'm such a baller, but I just couldn't stand not understanding where the decision to close our website came from. Anyways, uh, but, uh, any, any agreement that we would sign to be acquired would involve fairly onerous employment lockups. If you're thinking about enterprise value, it really comes down to diversity of capital and income streams. Diversity of human capital, no one person. Goldman Sachs always has co-presidents and co-heads. They never want the head of investment banking to walk in and go, "I own 40% of the revenue here, pay me $100 million or I'm going to JPMorgan." So they have co-heads, and if someone walks in and threatens them, they can stand up and say, "Congratulations, enjoy Lazard Frères or LionTree or Mollis or wherever you're going, right? Evercore."

You've got some pockets of green in the trade that's keeping the S&P from falling further down about half a percent, like Nvidia and AMD. AMD. Energy stocks are rallying too, but everything else is lower. The Dow is being dragged down in particular by Goldman Sachs shaving 163 points off the Dow. Microsoft and UNH are the biggest drivers. David, back over to you.
