  1. Bill intellectually and on every other level occupies a very different place in the galaxy to little me, I gotta tell you. So anyway, let me take you, let me take you back to the question you posed, Bill Gates circa 1982, '83. So this is a sort of an odd recollection. I remember being at— this was all about the same time, so you've got to put everything here in perspective. I had been at an offsite that Steve Jobs had hosted for a group of people he was working with at Apple, and a guest speaker one evening was a gentleman called Ben Rosen, who was an early venture capitalist a wonderful human being, and who very sadly died just a few weeks ago in his early 90s.

  2. The system is working very, very well, and they've even tracked— not a lot of them, but I've tracked a few of them back to things like, for example, a blazar. Uh, we haven't talked about blazars very often, but it's essentially a black hole-powered jet in a galaxy, and that jet is pointing right, basically right towards us. So we call that a blazar. There's also, uh, been— these high-energy neutrinos have been, have been detected potentially coming from what they call a tidal disruption event, which is essentially where a supermassive black hole consumes a star and just rips it apart. Or they've also, they've also traced these back to starburst galaxies in the early universe. So they have been kind of connecting the dots between these high-energy neutrinos and, and what's creating them. The milestone here— why is this a milestone? Why is this worthy of of a Nobel Prize. In my mind, this relates to multi-messenger astronomy.

  3. Joanna Stern built an empire on the default Windows laptop. Uh, And then it was the XPS 13 for like years and years and years. Uh, if you asked me what is the default Android tablet, I would— some Galaxy Tab?

  4. Basically 50/50. Um, and I, you know, I made it clear that if you're not like up on game, you could probably just safely order the smooth and it's going to feel like what you're used to. But if you do know ball, then it's cool to know you have the option of a control texture surface. So that is, uh, that's where we're at. They're out. They're available. Go check them out. MKBHD.com. Uh, okay. Now speaking of things that are not so cheap, Galaxy S26 prices did go up, um, roughly by $100 across the board. So we talked about this when Apple did it. They raised a lot of prices that were not the iPhone. And then they launched new iPhones, obviously, that are more pricey. Galaxy S26s have been out since January, but are now getting a price increase, uh, near the end of this year.

  5. So it did finally hit the entire Apple Store, basically. Um, so basically everything's about $100 more expensive. That's kind of right in line with what we seem to be expecting from everyone. So like the Galaxy S26, 256GB instead of starting at $900, it's a $1,000 phone now. And then you go up from there. So if you want an S26 Plus, that's a $1,200 phone. If you want an Ultra, that's a $1,400 phone. $1,400 phone to start, and they go up from there. I think the max price 1TB Ultra is a $2,000 phone now.

  6. Okay, I'll go in order. So we start with best big phone, and this is funny because when we first started the Smartphone Awards, there was distinctly huge phones. Yeah, like phablet, like Galaxy Note, Galaxy What do they call it? Galaxy Mega?
Marques · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · The 2026 Smartphone Awards Discussion Episode · 2026-10-09
  7. Galaxy— No.
Andrew · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · The 2026 Smartphone Awards Discussion Episode · 2026-10-09
  8. No, it was just Galaxy Mega. And it was a phablet freakishly big phone, which to us today is a regular-sized phone.
Marques · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · The 2026 Smartphone Awards Discussion Episode · 2026-10-09
  9. That would be a small phone today. Yeah, I know. Which is crazy. Galaxy Mega would be a small phone today. Oh my. But yeah, we used to have like distinctly huge phones and small phones, so I would give an award for best big phone. Yeah. Nowadays, all these slab phones are kind of the same size. Like we have the Ultras that are really big, and then we have all the other phones that are just big.
Marques · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · The 2026 Smartphone Awards Discussion Episode · 2026-10-09
  10. Yeah. I kind of think that the— we have all the usual players in this space. Like we always get Moto Gs at $225 or whatever. We always get— now we always get CMF phones. We always get Nothing phones. We always get like Galaxy A series phones. And a lot of them are pretty predictable. And I don't want to fall into the trap of just being like, well, this one has the best specs, so it just wins. Because I think the experience of using a budget phone sometimes is more than just the specs.
Marques · Waveform_ The MKBHD Podcast · The 2026 Smartphone Awards Discussion Episode · 2026-10-09
  11. That's fine. I mean, there's going to be, you get like, like the A series is very predictable. They're just paring down what you know from a Galaxy S26 and it's just going to be the A54. Whatever they do. Like, that's a, that's a very predictable, safe budget phone. But that's almost like the most boring possible option. And I'm curious, I'm gonna sort of— what I usually end up doing is digging back through the whole year of phones under a certain number and seeing like which ones actually were good, which ones were interesting, did something unique at that price. That's more likely to win an award for best budget phone or best value phone.

  12. We're in a situation where we are arguing about the smallest things. You have no idea. We're monkeys arguing about who gets more bananas. And I am saying, we can make so many more bananas. No, we have the entire universe. There are like 200 billion stars in this galaxy alone, and there are over 200 billion galaxies.

  15. Um, IceCube has already discovered astrophysical neutrinos, identified two galaxies as neutrino sources, and observed neutrinos from our own—
