Solar stocks getting a boost this morning as the president imposes some fresh tariffs on a key component in manufacturing solar panels and semiconductors. A move our next guest is applauding, calling it, quote, one of the most strategically significant trade measures in decades. Joining us in a first CBC exclusive, actually, is First Solar CEO Mark Windmark. Mark, welcome. Good to get your insight on this one.

We've been dealing with this. You know, we're an American company we established here over 25 years ago. American technology, American manufacturing, American supply chain. We've been fighting these trade battles with predatory, aggressive dumping that we've seen from China, whether directly from China or its other adversarial countries that it's established manufacturing in. So we've had to do a lot of trade cases to do that. This is sort of— eliminates those one-off country cases and does a comprehensive strategic approach to enabling supply chains here and enabling American prosperity and job creation. You know, our supply chain right now here in the U.S. supports 40,000 jobs. I mean, that's a meaningful impact to the economy, about $4 billion of annual payroll as well. So this will allow further investments, not just by First Solar but other companies as well, to do some of the things that we've been able to do here in the US.

So, so I look at this as this is really about enabling innovation and innovation will help drive costs down. You know, the capabilities of semiconductor, there's two different types. There's crystalline is silicon, which is what this initiative is largely focused on. The other is a thin film technology for semiconductor, which is what First Solar has created and established. And we're the only company in the world that has a thin film semiconductor. Now, what this will do is it'll bring the two together. It'll create the opportunity to couple the two technologies together to continue to lead from an innovation standpoint. And innovation drives cost out. There's no doubt about that. So long term, I think this will will be cost reduction and drive power prices down. And the other thing I always like to remind people of is, you know, power prices for solar are deflationary by, by nature because it's a fixed cost, right? So once the power plant is constructed, the panels will operate for about 50 years, 40 to 50 years, and there's no input cost. And so it becomes deflationary. You have a fixed power price for the duration of the operating conditions of that power plant.
