What does it mean on the chart where it says correlated? Well, it's when all stocks move together, which is a great segue into the next chart from Jon Krinsky. Check this out. Krinsky shows the trading days where more than 80% of the downside volume, more than 80% of the volume is to the downside. And we haven't had any. Jonathan says it is an anomaly in that there has yet to be even one 80% downside volume day. Wow. The average year sees 21 such days and we have never had a year with less than 5. This is so insane. Chart off, please. Because even the reason why this is happening is because even during the war, you had the energy stocks. I think this is why you had the energy stocks absolutely ripping. There's been a lot of charts that have made the year funky where you have like Adam Parker has a chart showing negative beta. Evercore copied it. I think Adam was first. And the reason why there were so many negative beta stocks meaning stocks that go up when the market goes down or go down when the market is up. It was primarily energy. And that is just making this calendar year a very odd one, to say nothing of the concentration. And AI up, software down, software up, AI down. It's just been an unusual year for sure.
Michael Batnick — The Compound and Friends · Treasury yields break out, how to invest with Bill Ackman, Workday rumors, off-balance sheet madness · 2026-08-18Good Tuesday morning. Welcome to Squawk on the Street. I'm Carl Quintanilla with Leslie Picker and Mike Santoli, live at post-9 of the New York Stock Exchange. Sarah Izen, David Faber are off. Tech stocks getting hit hard today, but the big focus is on the bond market as yields around the world hit some multi-decade highs. We're going to talk to Neuberger's global head of fixed income and Evercore's Roger Altman about what exactly is driving those moves. Social media facing what some are calling a big tobacco moment as a major trial gets underway in California alleging that Meta caused addictive behavior in teens and children. And we'll get to this move in Depot this morning, what it means for the other major retailers that are waiting to report earnings later in the week.
Carl Quintanilla — Squawk on the Street · 10AM Hour: Global Bond Yields Spike, Evercore’s Roger Altman, Meta Goes to Trial 8/18/26 · 2026-08-18All right, uh, Frank, thank you very much. Take a look at earnings performance as we approach the end of Q2 reporting season. Up more than 51% from a year ago for S&P 500 companies. But our next Our next guest is warning that rising yields could begin to put pressure on equity prices despite strong earnings. Joining us now is Evercore founder and senior chairman Roger Altman. Roger, you know, obviously these, these relationships go back a long way. In theory, higher, higher yields, higher real yields should impact equity valuations. Interestingly, though, the absolute level of yield or the shape of the yield curve isn't at a historical extreme. So I guess we have to sort out about how much impact this should have.
Mike Santoli — Squawk on the Street · 10AM Hour: Global Bond Yields Spike, Evercore’s Roger Altman, Meta Goes to Trial 8/18/26 · 2026-08-18So the energy piece is true. It's probably been more of a boost to aggregate earnings. And then the tariff refunds, which, you know, companies don't want to highlight very much, right? They want to make it seem a little more organic and don't raise their hand and say, hey, we got money back from the government. So it all goes into the mix. I'm not sure if it's something where, you know, because it's August into September, we're going to have a little bit of tougher times because we have to contend with this recent rally or not. And let's talk about exactly that. Here is Giulio— Julian Emanuel. He's chief equity derivatives and quant strategist at Evercore ISI. Julian, take it from there, because I know you're looking at a lot of the same issues here.
Mike Santoli — Squawk on the Street · 10AM Hour: Berkshire’s Alphabet Stake, Real Estate Execs React to NYC Pied-à-Terre Tax, Ferrari EV Sets Auction Record 8/17/26 · 2026-08-17So we actually think that if you look at all structural tech-driven bull markets of the last 25 or 30 years, they invariably end with a stampede. You saw it at the end of 2021. You certainly saw it in Y2K. And from our point of view, and we were having this conversation in Evercore's morning meeting, there really isn't any FOMO out there. There is a sense of unease. Now, investors are reasonably grossed up once again. In the wake of the situational awareness unwind. But in our mind, the cycle has further to go and you're likely to get this sort of euphoric lift as you did previously, which is also why in our mind, with the VIX at 15, if you want to think into 2027, long-term call options on the triple Qs make a lot of sense.
