It's then pumped to giant steel tanks where it waits for a ship to come pick it up. Which brings us to our last stop, the final resting place for this CO2. On the other side of Norway. I visit the Northern Lights facility in Oigaten, a carbon storage project owned by the fossil fuel companies Equinor, Shel and Total Energies. Most of its funding so far has come from the Norwegian government. Norway itself is quite wealthy thanks to the country's majority stake in the state oil company Equinor. The goal of this project is to inject massive amounts of CO2 under the north Sea and turn a profit.
Sam Baker — Marketplace · Inflation is moving the wrong way · 2026-06-22So then we getso for a while we've had the mines and the brines, right? So suddenly, not just Appalachia. If you look around at every oil well, so we talked about oil wells producing oil and gas. And there's a third thing they all produce, which is brackish water. Salt water comes out of every oil well. And when I say salt water, we always think sodium chloride, sodium's a salt. But lithium chloride, lithium sits within these oil field brines. Exxon, for example, Equinor, some of the oil companies are like, well, wait a minute, I can drill for these lithium brine. I'll drill an oil well. I don't even need to find oil. I'll pump out this brine, I'll extract the lithium, and I'll compete with the lakes up in Atacama and the mines. And so then you get to Appalachia where we've drilled tens of thousands of these natural gas wells. And you've got resource a low, I should say a low density. Right. Low grade resource of lithium. And so companies now are trying to work at ways and they're starting first in Arkansas. So the first foray will be Arkansas wells. But you can sort of drill a couple water wells, these salty brine wells, put them through a chemical process that's really similar to desalination. Right. You think about, I understand, okay, take the salt out, but keep it. And then suddenly we might have a low cost, high volume source of lithium. That should scare if you believe in technology. Well, it should scare lithium investors, right,
