  1. Okay, so we want our AI giants to be the ones that conquer the world and not China's. We want Alphabet to win and not Baidu.

  2. Yes. And, you know, for another reason, the, the American system will allow those companies to earn a massive amount of money, um, and their founders to richer. And China has shown us they do not like that, that fundamental approach. So you won't even be able to make a lot of money if Baidu wins or Baba wins or Tencent wins or Deepseek wins. Those will be constrained. Uh, only in the Western system will you allow companies to make the money they can.

  3. So imagine that instead of— I know people don't like big tech, but imagine if Google and Microsoft and Meta and all these companies were actually— it was Baidu and Alibaba and Tencent and all the rest of them. Instead. I mean, obviously that would be way worse for the United States. Our economy would not be as vibrant, it would not be as cutting edge, and all that wealth would have gone into China. There are also military or, you know, dual-use applications of this technology, especially with AI. The algorithms power all sorts of weapons, drones, things like that. So we'll be behind them. I mean, look, America is not gonna be the number one country in the world economically and militarily if we lose AI. It's just that simple.

  4. Here are 3 big movers we're watching today. First, Klarna down pretty sizably despite reporting a surprise profit. The company trimming its outlook, though, for full-year growth gross merchandise value. They cite a more measured view of the German consumer, the company's largest market by volume. You can see shares of Klarna down 19%. Next, Baidu reporting a 68% drop in Q2 net profit, revenue also falling just over 4% year over year. The company trying to remake itself as a prominent AI player as its core advertising business continues to shrink. Right now, those shares down about 9.5%. And Home Depot beating on the top and bottom lines in terms of guidance. The company reaffirming its full-year numbers in the face of what it's calling frozen housing market conditions. For more on Home Depot's quarter, let's bring in UBS analyst Michael Lasser. He has a buy rating on the stock with a $430 price target. Michael, it's good to have you. Maybe we could just start by level-setting, you know, reading the details of this report. What do you think it said? About the state of the consumer right now?

  5. Stay with us. Watch Baidu this morning. Double miss both on the top and the bottom line, although some of the internals— GPU cloud revenue, AI cloud revenue— pretty good.

  6. Hello, today is Sunday, August 16th, and I'm your host, Kim Ka. Wall Street gets a series of fresh reads on the health of the US consumer this week with Walmart, Target, and Home Depot reporting earnings. Home Depot kicks off the retail reports Tuesday, giving investors a look at demand for home improvement as consumers continue to contend with elevated elevated borrowing costs and a sluggish housing market. Target follows Wednesday with investors watching for signs of strength in discretionary spending and an update on the retailer's outlook for the second half of the year. And Walmart is the main event Thursday. Investors will be looking for the retail giant's latest read on consumer spending as well as the impact of tariffs on pricing. The company has topped earnings estimates in 15 of the past 16 quarters. Oppenheimer recently downgraded Walmart to perform from outperform warning that U.S. comparable sales could fall short of expectations. Analyst Rupesh Parekh expects comps of about 3%, below the Street figure of 3.8%. "We expect strong grocery momentum to continue in a more difficult backdrop lately and are modeling a moderation for both the general merchandise and health and wellness categories," he said. Here's how the rest of the earnings calendar shapes up: Baidu reports Tuesday. Analog Devices , Lowe's, and Estée Lauder weigh in on Wednesday. and Alibaba, Deere, and Ross Stores report Thursday. Looking to the economy, the minutes of the last Fed meeting where the FOMC held rates with 3 dissents are due Wednesday. Wells Fargo economists say they expect the minutes to reflect that members are willing to be patient for now when it comes to further progress on inflation, but the bar is low for future rate hikes if inflation does not slow further. Next month's employment and inflation data will go a long way toward deciding the September FOMC meeting. but the path is clearly there for policymakers to once again leave the Fed funds rate unchanged, they added. In the news this weekend, Anthropic is forecasting its 2028 revenue to reach roughly $190 to $200 billion, a figure that will help determine its IPO valuation when the AI startup makes its much-anticipated public debut, Reuters reported. Multiple reference points, including cloud infrastructure firm Cloudflare, enterprise software company Palantir, and newly public SpaceX are under consideration as valuation comps.

  7. Exactly. Good morning, Carl, and good to see you. So coming out of Apple's Houston event with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Tim Cook is putting a made-in-America spin on a classic Apple playbook, bringing more of its supply chain onto U.S. soil without bringing the heavy CapEx onto Apple's balance sheet. Now, Cook using this Texas expansion to talk up the end-to-end silicon supply chain that Apple is building in the US, but Houston is a great example of how that model works. Foxconn takes on much of the CapEx for the assembly lines. Apple commits to buy what comes off of them and can count that spending toward its $600 billion US commitment. Same basic playbook with TSMC in Arizona and Corning in Kentucky. Suppliers build the capacity, Apple brings the demand, and then Cook gets the Made in America credit without Apple itself spending ends of billions building fabs and factories. And in his final days as CEO, you can see Cook clearing the runway on both sides of the Pacific for incoming chief executive John Ternus, managing Washington on the supply chain while trying to get Apple Intelligence over the line in China. Reuters reporting that Apple trained its own China-specific AI model with Alibaba's support. We already knew that Apple planned to use Alibaba and Baidu models there. Building one of its own could give Apple more control over the experience, though it is still unclear how those models would work together. But if approved, Apple would be the first foreign company allowed to offer its own proprietary AI model in China.

  8. Well, part of the incentive on the Apple side of this is that they haven't been able to offer any sort of agentic services. No Siri, no Apple Intelligence, and they're competing been on the back foot against Huawei because of it. And a lot of people in the mainland like the fact that they have this gigantic— Chinese OEMs. And that's something that Apple will for the first time be able to bring them because they're working with models from Alibaba and with Baidu's models.
