I was very moved also reading the book, just seeing that there were these people like this largely forgotten British benefactor, Jeanette Franklin Cohen, who I think was not Jewish, but had married a Jew who basically was the British benefactor who initially guaranteed that your father's fees would be paid. And so I think what's kind of extraordinary, and that has a lot of resonance in your life as well as someone who's been a great donor to various universities, is the fact that there were these people who kind of came forward out of nowhere. And I, I think your uncle as well, Ernest, your father's brother, I remember there was a lovely story where he, he's walking along Bond Street and has a chance meeting with another émigré, uh, who's a vague family acquaintance. And that person pays for his first year at school, which I think you said made him believe in God for the rest of his life. Can you talk about that?
William Green · The Investor's Podcast (We Study Billionaires) - The Investor’s Podcast Network · RWH073: Unstoppable w/ Sir Michael Moritz · 2026-10-11When, as you said, they bumped into this acquaintance and my grandfather explained the predicament that they had a slot at the school, a place at the school, but they didn't have the means. To pay for it. And this gentleman whose name I tried very hard to find out but couldn't find out stepped forward and paid for it. And then there were all these other people in Britain who in one way or another opened their hearts, their homes, their pocketbooks to these refugees. You mentioned this lady, Jeanette Franklin Cohen, who was very active. In all of this, many of these people were not Jewish.
Sir Michael Moritz · The Investor's Podcast (We Study Billionaires) - The Investor’s Podcast Network · RWH073: Unstoppable w/ Sir Michael Moritz · 2026-10-11Yeah, because we got used during the European debt crisis, remember, to think about another doom loop. That was the doom loop between sovereign balance sheets and commercial bank balance sheets because the commercial banks. The banks owned a lot of sovereign debt, and of course the governments, you would think, would be obligated to bail out the banks if in fact the banks' balance sheets got too stressed. So that was a doom loop between the banks and the sovereign. Here we have a doom loop between the bond market and the social protests. There's another potential doom loop too, right? I mean, every time yields go up or down very fast, the way they have in the last few months in the US, someone blows up. We saw it in 1974 with Franklin National. We saw it in 1984 with Continental Illinois. We saw it in 1994 with Orange County. We saw it in 2023 with Silicon Valley Bank. I'm concerned that what puts a cap on the movement we've seen in the long end of the yield curve is not that the economy slows, because that would— you know, that's the wrong causality. Yields are high because the economy is strong.
Terry Wiseman · Bloomberg Surveillance · Choppiness and Momentum Across Markets · 2026-10-09You want a no-frills supermarket? You want a no-frills supermarket? That was called Franklin's. You know what happened to it? It went broke because we didn't want to shop there. The market is— So there's that, right? So take that, then put on top of that, let's say you do it. So you divest these stores and they somehow find place for another 400 supermarkets. God knows where that's going to be in any reasonable— I mean, there's not that much land. It's like, there's a really good place for a supermarket out there. Coles and Woolies don't want it. IGA don't want it. Aldi doesn't want it. Costco doesn't want it. So I'm going to put it over there anyway.
Jason Moser · Motley Fool Money · The silliness of government groceries. October 9, 2026 · 2026-10-09I'm Gianna Gelosi with your Fox True Crime Minute. An Indiana murder suspect has been arrested two decades after allegedly killing a boy and stepmom when he was just a teenager. 35-year-old Michael Jerome James was arrested at a Shelbyville home more than 20 years after 26-year-old China Dickus and her stepson, 10-year-old Blake Dickus, were found stabbed to death in their Franklin home. The bodies were found inside the home by Sean Dickus, the boy's father, in July of 2006 after he returned from Chyna had been stabbed to death. Blake was knifed, beaten, and suffocated. James would have been 14 at the time of the killings, but the county prosecutor said he's going to be tried as an adult on the two murder counts. But they stopped short of disclosing the evidence they say linked James to the double murders or a potential motive. Local reports say James grew up a few miles away from the murder scene. His arrest came just days after the reward for information in the killings quadrupled to $100,000. There's more on this story at foxnews.com or subscribe to the Fox True Crime podcast. Shawn Ryan · The Shawn Ryan Show · #345 Wynonna Judd - Dolly Parton, Naomi Judd's Death & Finding Her Biological Father · 2026-10-05Right. We lived in a motel though for a while, and then she got us into school. I'm not sure why Franklin— maybe she had a friend. Again, you'll have to read her book. Probably she got a job as a secretary for someone in the music business. I will give her that. I can remember that. And so she became a secretary on Music Row. So maybe that was part of it. And we were living in a motel. I remember eating at McDonald's and lots of bologna and crackers. Yeah, she went for it. She was determined. And he found out we could sing, and so I think he might have paid for a tape or two. But we decided that we wanted to be in music.
Wynonna Judd · The Shawn Ryan Show · #345 Wynonna Judd - Dolly Parton, Naomi Judd's Death & Finding Her Biological Father · 2026-10-05We might have, actually, in Franklin. Now that I think about it, yeah, that could be. Actually, I'm not 100% sure, because at that point we're in the studio a little bit here and there in Nashville. So we must have gotten money from the guy that Mom worked for. To make a demo kind of thing. Again, that was online, and I think I have that somewhere. Wow. Yeah, yeah. We started to, you know, do things here and there. We did a morning show. I would get up at 2 in the morning. We would go do the show. We were between the farm report and the weather. And then go to school. And we did that like once a week.

Ben Carlson · Animal Spirits Podcast · Talk Your Book: How Higher Rates Are Re-Shaping Commercial Real Estate · 2026-10-05Like when we go to look for new space, whenever our lease runs up in a few years in New York City, we're not going to go to some 1970s building. We're going to go to a brand new spot that looks nice, right? Anyway, fascinating time to be in real estate because rates are shooting up and the economy's booming. It's like, it's like a weird thing to think about. The economy is still kind of booming, but rates are going up, making it more difficult. So on today's show, we had Jerry Baglin. Jerry is the head of real estate at Benefit Street Partners, a Franklin Templeton company, to talk about everything that's going on in commercial real estate, the spots that are attractive, the spots that are unattractive. I love talking to people in the space like this when, like, big things are happening. Like, if, if real estate was booming right now, it wouldn't be as interesting of a conversation as, oh my gosh, rates keep going up and up and up. They're going up really fast. What does this mean? And Jerry is a straight shooter with upper management written all over him. He told it like it is, right? You said office space earlier. So here's our talk with Jerry Baglan.
Ben Carlson · Animal Spirits Podcast · Talk Your Book: How Higher Rates Are Re-Shaping Commercial Real Estate · 2026-10-05The real problem is like the Benjamin Franklin quote, "For people that are willing to give up liberty for security deserve neither." Yes. You know, it's like when you give enormous corporations the power to monitor everywhere you go, everything you do, you're gonna self-censor, you're going to watch yourself, you're gonna feel like the eye in the sky, the fucking, the great eye of Sauron on is looking at you everywhere you go. Yeah, that's not what we want. We don't— is that the only solution to lessen crime? That seems crazy. It seems crazy. So Marc Andreessen, who I think he has some investment in, in the flock cameras, when he was on the podcast last, he was making an argument for it based on there was some shootings that happened in Austin Austin.
