Bank of America ($BAC) podcast mentions

  1. And I think it was Bank of America that had this really incredible chart that went viral on FinTwit showing sort of this profound shift in markets where the hyperscalers like the Alphabets and Amazons of the world, they were collectively seeing their free cash flow turn negative, while semiconductor companies that are designing and manufacturing the chips powering this AI revolution, they're the beneficiaries, and their cash flows have correspondingly skyrocketed. So the capital intensity is scaling up. That'll be a theme in today's episode, I think. And, you know, much more capital is being required for Alphabet to maintain its business than even was just the case 18 months ago.

  2. if you want some tough moves in the market today, check out the equity market, lift the lid on things and look at the banks. Banks again knocked about off the back of this decision. They've had some difficult guidance from the likes of Bank of America more recently, too. But I just noticed Goldman on the Bloomberg dropping some 4 or 5 percentage points this afternoon. Bramo, going into the close of the next 45 minutes or so. Banks have held up really well for the year so far. In fact, they've traded really well because nominal GDP is so strong off the back of that hawkish Fed speak. Just start to see those banks slide in response to that move in the yield curve.

  3. And all of these things I'm mentioning to you right now, they are not required to report any of this to the federal government. There are absolutely no regulations whatsoever around this technology. Not to mention, you know, the Hugging Face incident where OpenAI's agents hacked into this company. If I think if that had been Bank of America or another large, you know, a large bank or a large corporation, I think the conversation would have been completely different. But at the end of the day, we need transparency in these companies. These— all these big AI companies need regulations. This data, these— this technology This technology has been built on American data, American land, American energy, with American resources, and many times with American taxpayer dollars. And yet the American people have no seat at the table and no voice in, or in how this technology impacts our lives now or how it will be used to impact, impact our lives in the future.

  5. I was at Lehman in the late '90s, sorry, BofA from 2000 to 2008. When the financial crisis hit, I just had this opportunity to start my own company, Macro Risk Advisors. And it was really a, I think it was a couple things. One is folks were so blindsided by the financial crisis. We all talk about The Big Short and Michael Burry and Greg Littman. So yeah, a couple people saw it. There was widespread discussion of the housing bubble, but with regard to how the cracking of that bubble manifested itself in terms of option premiums and, you know, the surge in metrics like the VIX, credit spreads, and so forth, the likes of which we'd never seen before, I felt like investors were really unprepared for it. And in my last kind of year or so at BofA, I spent a ton of time with people in credit markets.

  8. But the 10-year this morning over 5% reached the highest level since back in 2007. It really is teeing off of oil, which remains higher, especially on concerns about this critical pipeline shutdown over in Saudi Arabia. Oil prices rise, 10-year yields rise, and then it's the self-reinforcing concerns about, you know, being the government being able to fund itself. But it is conference season and I've been following some of the, the commentary from bank and credit firms about what's happening out there with consumers and with businesses. And overall, it's pretty healthy read. Just want to share some commentary from the Blue Owl co-CEO. Remember, they're a big private creditor. They lend to all sorts of businesses. Credit quality remains pretty strong. And I can't look out more than a year, maybe 18 months, but I'm anticipating that will continue to be the case. Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, again, this is at the Barclays Financial Services Conference.

  9. Well, I mean, they feel higher oil prices and they feel some of the uncertainty from tariffs, which has ratcheted up back again, also I would, I would add housing to your list, Carl, because we did hear from the Equifax CFO who said mortgage clearly with where rates are now, that's more challenging. We've seen the impact on the transaction volumes in the market over the last— certainly over the last month or so. And, you know, it's this thing where while higher rates can be reflective of a better economy, Ed Yardeni has certainly said that 5%, don't freak out, it means the economy is doing well. It can also be a headwind. And Bank of America did their survey of fund managers and now the biggest tail risk for September has become a disorderly rise in bond yields. It used to be the AI bubble, at least if you were looking in August and July, those were— that was the sort of biggest outstanding concern. Now that moves to second place. Third place is the second wave of inflation. Geopolitical— geopolitics is actually way down on the list.

  10. One of the things that happened yesterday that kind of was obscured by all the trading worry about OpenAI were the banks and Bank of America spoke at a conference. I think Bank of America feels a little aggrieved about the coverage. And the reason I say that is because the stock was down very— down 5% on what could consider to be only a 1.5% EPS cut. I don't even know if they're going to have to do an EPS cut. The problem was Brian did say that this was going to be a very good trading period. But meaning that they expected a flat trading period. Now, there were some people who were on the upside from that, but it was kind of interpreted as being a down trading, a down quarter on trading. It was a prediction. It wouldn't be so bad if business were flat when we consider the fact that what was the problem was in Asia, bank market Asia, not here. They're still saying everything's in place. Should it have been down 5%? Maybe it should be down 3%. Maybe 2%.

  11. You know, it's funny, I'm just taking a look at shares of, of, of Thermo Fisher. We're going to be speaking to Mark Casper not very long from now. Of course, that stock is up nicely this morning. Want to make sure whether or not he hasn't said anything or if he has, what it might have been as well. Dan Simcoe, it's going to be interesting later in the day, of course, given he's the co-president. What you were covering earlier, Jim, from Bank of America, certainly going to be a part of our conversation in terms of is financing slowing in any way? You know, the deal pipeline and on and on from there. Guys, worth mentioning. And Jim, you know, we are seeing a bit of a rebound in many of the names that were down yesterday, of course. Intel's up, ARM's up, AMD's up, NVIDIA's up, and on from there. Not quite as up much as they were down yesterday, but nonetheless worth noting.

  14. House Speaker Mike Johnson. OpenAI reportedly acquired the startup Glass Imaging in recent months. Now, Glass Imaging is developing higher-quality cameras for smartphones The Wall Street Journal reports this deal values Glass Imaging at over $300 million. Now, Glass Imaging's technology uses AI to produce image quality on par with DSLR cameras. OpenAI's exact plans for Glass Imaging are unclear, although we do know that OpenAI has been developing a secretive device with Jony Ive, the former Apple executive who helped design the iPhone. There was weakness among financial stocks today after Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan predicted trading revenue will be relatively flat in the third quarter. Moynihan told Bloomberg even if that happens, BofA will still have one of its best third quarters ever.

  15. that is Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan. He went on to say that he feels very good about the company's guidance for net interest income. Today, shares in Bank of America were down 5%, and the KBW Bank Index fell nearly 2%. Crude oil prices edged higher on fears of tighter supply. Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia closed its major east-west pipeline following attacks late last week. This pipeline, by the way, carries about 7 million barrels a day to an export hub on the Red Sea. It's been key to bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said today the closure will be temporary.
